Congratulations to recent graduate Nidhi Purohit, MD '26, recipient of our 2026 Outstanding Student Award. This award is given annually to a member of the graduating class who has made unique and meaningful contributions to the University of Virginia School of Medicine and to the UVA Medical Alumni Association. Executive Director Barry Collins presented the award during Sunday's Hooding Ceremony on behalf of the MAA's Board of Directors and the Medical School Foundation's Board of Trustees.

Dr. Purohit was recognized for playing an essential role in keeping the Class of 2026 connected and serving as a liaison between the class and the MAA. As a student, she consistently offered thoughtful feedback on behalf of her classmates and was a tireless champion who encouraged student involvement.

Congratulations, Dr. Purohit! 🧡💙

Alumnus Peter Wong, MD ’92, was one of more than 100 UVA alumni and family members volunteering at this year’s Final Exercises.

Dr. Wong, a gastroenterologist in Fredericksburg, Va., says giving back is a way to show his gratitude for the education he received at the University of Virginia. He previously served on the UVA Medical Alumni Association’s Board of Directors from 2016 to 2022 and established a scholarship for mental health education and research.

This year, UVA reached out to alumni living within an hour of Charlottesville and asked them to come back and help during Final Exercises. Dr. Wong responded and was part of the balloon brigade during Saturday’s festivities. “It was a unique experience at Ground Zero, collecting and transferring donated balloons from graduates. I was emotionally overwhelmed witnessing the jubilant students in their caps and gowns, along with their proud parents and relatives,” he says. “As a volunteer, I’m glad to have contributed to the success of this monumental event.”

Dr. Wong describes giving his time and resources as an “absolute honor” and he encourages others to do the same. “I invite my fellow alumni to reflect on their own university experiences and join me in supporting the next generation,” he says.

Thanks for setting such a great example, Dr. Wong! You can learn about alumni volunteer opportunities with the MAA online:

Sean Crites, SMD'26, is the recipient of our 2026 Richard W. Lindsay Award in Geriatrics, which recognizes excellence during the geriatric clerkship rotation.

"My interest in geriatrics is rooted in a commitment to caring for patients whose medical complexity is inseparable from their lived experiences, functional goals, and relationships. I am particularly passionate regarding early conversations about goals of care, independence, and quality of life to guide clinical decision-making," he says.

After graduating this weekend, Sean will pursue his residency in family medicine at Carolinas Medical Center.

Congratulations, Sean! 🧡💙
