The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy was established by the University of Virginia in 2007 as part of its strategic plan and as an expression of its Jeffersonian heritage. The Batten School is the first new school to be established at the University since the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration was created in 1955.

Today, more than 175 UVA Batten students, faculty and staff spread out across the Albemarle-Charlottesville region to volunteer with local nonprofit organizations for the 17th annual “Batten Builds” day of service. Charlottesville Mayor Juandiego Wade helped kick off the day and thanked participants for giving back to their community.

Organized by the Batten Undergraduate Council, Batten Builds is part of orientation for incoming third-year and transfer students to the bachelor’s program. Students not only build relationships with their cohort, but also put Batten's commitment to public service into action.

This year, the school partnered with 16 local organizations working on issues including sustainable gardening, food access, affordable housing, support for seniors and those with autism, literacy, the arts and more.

Lynn Hurley spent 33 years helping organizations become more efficient by transforming their finance, human resources, and payroll systems. But in 2025, she watched federal cuts hit not only her customers, but her friends and neighbors. She found herself searching for a way to turn frustration into something constructive. That search led her to the University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy’s Grad Certificate in Public Policy, which she completed in May 2026 – and which convinced her to enroll in the Master of Public Policy next. Data expertise meets the work that matters in our new Master of Public Policy and Data program!

The MSPP&D will provide specialized training in cutting-edge analytical methods, taught by faculty whose research is helping shape the future of evidence-informed policymaking. Students will be trained to lead rather than interpret, designing the systems, structuring the evidence, and embedding analytical rigor into institutional decision-making.

This program is a primarily online program offered in both part-time and full-time formats, with applications now open for Spring '27 and Fall '27.
