Biomedical Engineering Society at UVA The Biomedical Engineering Society provides social, academic, and professional events for its member

The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) at the University of Virginia works to promote the exchange of ideas among students and faculty. We coordinate various academic, professional, educational, social, sporting, and service events throughout the year while reaching out to students who are interested in the application of science and engineering principles to medicine and life sciences. Our cha

pter is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students within the BME department as well as students from other university departments who have an interest in BME. Our chapter has a strong record of service within the UVa and central Virginia communities and has been recognized by the National Biomedical Engineering Society several times. Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization, which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.

Just a heads up that the 2014 Southeast Biomedical Engineering Career Conference (SEBECC) is being sponsored by BMES and Clemson in Atlanta this year on Friday, September 26. The abstract deadline for posters is August 12th and the early sign up is August 21st.

This conference will provide valuable information and exposure on different career paths within the field, and the opportunity to put you in contact with companies in the area. If you have been working in a lab this summer, this will also be a perfect place to present your research during their poster session. Information can be found here:http://bmes.org/sebecc14

If you have any questions, please email Renee Han at [email protected] or [email protected].

Thanks!

Genetic Engineering making advances with Immunotherapy! Here's a blurb from "theSkimm" today:

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU NEED GOOD NEWS…
Cervical cancer cases in two women went into remission after they underwent a new treatment. The treatment involved immunotherapy — the avocado toast of cancer research (hint: it’s getting trendy). Immune cells were harvested from the womens’ tumors, multiplied in a lab, and then infused back into the women. The treatment is meant to boost patients’ immune systems and one of the women called it “Gatorade for the cells.” Although the treatment didn’t work on everyone in the study, the two women have been cancer-free for more than a year. It’s the first time immunotherapy has worked this well against a cancer caused by a virus (in this case, HPV).
