University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics Updates, news, and info from UVA's Center for Applied Biomechanics

The University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics, which just celebrated its 35th anniversary, is the largest university-based injury biomechanics laboratory in the world. The 30,000 square-foot facility, located in the University of Virginia’s North Fork Research Park, boasts several state-of-the-art pieces of equipment, as well as custom resources and capabilities that are unique to the

laboratory. This includes servo-hydraulic and electro-mechanical materials testing machines, a Seattle Safety Systems servo-controlled reverse-acceleration sled, a VIA Systems deceleration sled, a 16-camera high-speed motion capture system, and the world’s first university-based full-scale rollover sled system, which is capable of rolling a sport-utility vehicle at 400-deg/s and dropping it onto a moving roadbed. The Center is a joint venture of the Schools of Engineering and Medicine and houses researchers with a diversity of backgrounds, including mechanical, biomedical, electrical, and civil engineers, a biostatistician, an epidemiologist, orthopedic surgeons, ER doctors, radiologists, and a pathologist.

Vehicle collisions are a leading cause of trauma for pregnant individuals in the U.S. - Assoc. Prof. Jason Forman & Ph.D. student Cori Espelien at the University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics together w/ Asst. Prof. Pavel Chernyavskiy at the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia joined forces to try to remedy this. Some of their work was recently published here: https://at.virginia.edu/I7yROe

Did you know that most studies on traumatic brain injury (TBI) neglect normal anatomical variations present within the population? A new study from the University of Virginia Center for Applied Biomechanics using subject-specific models found a strong linear relationship between brain size and brain strain for the same head impact scenario. This is crucial for developing personalized protective equipment and aiding clinical diagnostics of TBI. Learn more about our findings here." https://at.virginia.edu/Gw8Evh UVA Radiology & Medical Imaging

It’s not every day that we get to welcome the Acting Administrator of NHTSA into our laboratory!

It was truly an honor to be able to show off a few of our ongoing projects, and have meaningful discussions with NHTSA leadership about road safety and injury prevention research.

Are you interested in touring our space and hearing more about our projects? Feel free to reach out!
