Materials Science & Engineering - University of Virginia

Materials Science & Engineering - University of Virginia The diversity of backgrounds among incoming students provides novel approaches to challenging research problems.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) offers graduate students a welcoming and vigorous education and research environment to achieve the MS and PhD degrees. The department presently consists of 24 faculty members, 27 research professionals, 17 staff members and 100 graduate students including the faculty and students of Engineering Physics. New graduate students enter the depa

rtment with previous degrees in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymer science, all branches of engineering, physics, chemistry and mathematics. In addition to its graduate programs, the department is responsible for the undergraduate Engineering Science degree with an option in Materials Science and Engineering, as well as staffing a minor in materials.

Please join the UVA community in remembering Devin, Lavel, and D’Sean on the day, one year ago, when their lives were tragically cut short. At 12:55 p.m., the Chapel bells will play a verse of “Amazing Grace” followed by three tolls of the bells, honoring each life lost. Many in our community will gather near the Chapel and on the Lawn. For those who cannot gather on Grounds, the moment of remembrance will be streamed at www.virginia.edu/live.

On this anniversary, know student support is available through UVA Student Health & Wellness and TimelyCare. Emotional support is available to UVA faculty, staff, and their family members through FEAP.

Congratulations to University of Virginia Entrepreneurship Cup winners MSE grad students Ankita Biswas, Ho Lun Chan, Ryan Grimes and Roberto Herrera del Valle. Their concept, Hoos.ai, transforms code-based machine learning into a web app platform-based application to simplify the process of machine learning for academic and materials R&D applications. The team will develop their idea as participants in an entrepreneurship training program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps site at UVA. Major’s Night was a perfect way for us to share our passion for micro scales and macro impacts. We are excited that so many UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science undergraduates took time to learn about our classes, labs, career paths and clubs like the Materials Advantage student chapter. See what we have to offer: https://at.virginia.edu/OzaP12

UVA Engineering's team, "The Rotunda," participated in the DomesDay competition during the 2022 International Materials, Application & Technologies Conference organized by ASM International. MSE undergraduates designed a geodesic dome with innovative architecture, design and materials selection, subjected to compression testing.

UVA Engineering's team, "The Rotunda," was selected to participate in the DomesDay competition during the International Materials, Application & Technologies Conference (IMAT) 2022, organized by ASM International. The team designed a geodesic dome with innovative architecture, design and materials selection. The mechanical properties of the dome were measured through compression testing during the conference. This was the first time that UVA MSE undergraduates participated in the DomesDay contest.

Prasanna Balachandran, assistant professor of MSE and UVA Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is conducting research to deepen theoretical knowledge about polar thermoelectric materials for energy conversion technologies. Balachandran has joined efforts with GeorgeMasonUniversity assistant professor Xiaoyan Tan and James Madison University assistant professor Masoud Kaveh-Baghbadorani to conduct research on a polycrystalline material that is metastable at ambient conditions, supported by a $5,000 4-VA grant. Read their paper in the July 2022 issue of ACS Chemistry of Materials.

A metastable polycrystalline Ag2GeS3 compound was prepared at 1000 °C with binary Ag2S and GeS2 as starting materials. At room temperature, Ag2GeS3 was determined to adopt a polar orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Cmc21) based on the Rietveld refinement of synchrotron X-ray diffraction da...
