When UVA assembled a 22-member committee to shape the University's next strategic plan, only one undergraduate made the list. Meet Noah Dyer, a fourth-year McIntire student, captain of the Virginia's Men's Swimming & Diving team, and the sole undergraduate on President Scott Beardsley's strategic planning committee.

Noah is honest about the weight of it. He describes "mixed feelings of excitement and pressure" in trying to represent as many student voices as possible. But instead of speaking only for athletes or Commerce students, he's chosen to serve on behalf of the entire student body.

And he's carrying a McIntire lesson with him. From Professor Paul Seaborn's strategy course, he learned that real strategy requires trade-offs, not just good intentions.

What does a business school's student government actually do? At McIntire, the answer is making sure students feel valued and heard.

The 2026-2027 Commerce Council leaders have built the plan for the whole year around three words: unity, engagement, and wellness. President Rohan Misra, Vice President Sophia White, and Treasurer Jackson Manderfield describe the Council as a building block that drives the community, one that is intentionally designed to give every student the best possible experience. How will they do it? By facilitating connection among students, faculty, and alumni alike, and welcoming advice, mentorship, and career conversations from the broader Commerce community.

The plans are supportive, fun, and down to earth. Pickleball and basketball tournaments. A "walk and talk" that gets professors and students out of the classroom and moving. Food drops. A holiday event still in the works.

Welcome to McIntire, second-years!

Over two energizing days, nearly 400 incoming second-year students gathered in Shumway Hall to begin their journey in McIntire's B.S. in Commerce program.

From featured speakers and small-group workshops to problem-solving games, this is not your standard orientation. Designed to feel more like a professional business conference, COMMence marked the beginning of a shared experience that will help our Class of 2029 thrive not only while they are at McIntire but later, in their careers and communities.

A special thank-you to Hilton, McIntire's longtime partner, whose generous commitment helps make COMMence possible. We were proud to welcome Laura Schofield as our keynote, and we are deeply grateful for Hilton's investment in our students, our community, and the future of Commerce.

Can undergrads actually reshape a national brand's strategy? At McIntire, they just did.

How do business students get real consulting experience? Here's one answer. This spring, students in Professor Derick Davis' Marketing Research class at UVA's McIntire School of Commerce took on a live problem for Huckberry, the outdoor lifestyle brand co-founded by alum Andy Forch (McIntire '07).

No simulation. A real company trying to figure out how to grow its house brands and reach younger shoppers without losing the loyal customers who built it.

The students didn't just theorize. Each team ran 60-80 open-ended, AI-assisted interviews, then backed those insights with Qualtrics surveys that generated roughly 200 responses each. They layered in segmentation and A/B testing to separate signal from noise.

The result? Forch found the recommendations actionable enough to hand straight to his internal marketing team. In his words, he "didn't hear 10 different things." The teams converged.

What professional research teams often spend far longer aligning on, these students delivered in a single semester.

Can a teenager really teach financial literacy to 1,100+ students across two continents?

David Sun did.

The UVA McIntire second-year founded Build-A-Biz, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, at age 16, and its free seminars have now reached more than 1,100 students from Illinois to Zambia. On National Nonprofit Day, we're celebrating the student-led impact happening through organizations like his.

His own money education started with a shock: taxes pulled from his first ice cream-scooping paycheck. In a household where finances were rarely discussed, he taught himself from YouTube, then taught his family. Today he helps manage his parents' Roth IRA and his father's 401(k).

To build credibility as a high schooler, David emailed roughly 10,000 professors, bank tellers, and customer service reps, then recruited the ones who replied as guest speakers.

That persistence followed him to Grounds. He now teaches budgeting at Henley Middle School, with quizzes built around MrBeast and Pokémon, while his volunteers run sessions for students in Zambia, sometimes logging on at 5 a.m. Central Time.

His guiding phrase says it all: "commerce for the common good."
