The seventh “Hoo Needs a Hug” was another huge success with beautiful spring weather, hugs, high fives, laughter, smiles, treats and furry dog snuggles! The coordinating team of Julie Hawkins, Amy Scherer, Jomie Wilding, Kathleen Muhlbauer, Laura Steele, Mellony Harris, Amy Nickol, Liz Ford, Allison Lee, Becky Hoey, Kyong Dries, and Katy Apostolides are so appreciative of the 80+ Mom, Dad, and Grandma superstars who rocked Grounds and spread joy, encouragement and love for the students. The UVA community truly is one of a kind!
Pulling off three locations would not be possible without the help of UVA Student Engagement, continued incredibly generous grant funding from both the UVA Alumni Association Student Engagement Fund and UVA Parent Fund, and community partners Denise Ramey Real Estate and Elevate Meal Plan, which allowed us to purchase supplies, over 200 dozen donuts, 600 bagels, cream cheese, clementines, bananas, and cookies!Thank you to Sunshine of Thumbprints Bakeshop who donated dozens of cookies and baked orders from parents, Carter’s Mountain Orchard, Krispy Kreme, and Duck Donuts for the delicious doughnuts (a student favorite!), and Bodo’s Bagels who donated hundreds of bagels.
And…to the fabulous Hoo parents and supporters who assisted from afar! Over 3000 items were purchased from the Amazon wish list, and dozens of donuts were purchased from Krispy Kreme and Duck Donuts by generous parents.
Thank you to PT 4:13 for purchasing 1500 Hoo Needs a Hug wristband bracelets which the students love! And to our amazing volunteers who showed up with wagons and armloads of treats—goodie bags, homemade cookies, cupcakes, chips, stickers, fruit, and more.
Thank you to our therapy dog volunteers. The love for dogs is always something so special to experience firsthand.
We are so appreciative to Blue Ridge Graphics for printing volunteer shirts at a discount and the generosity of the UVA Alumni Association for covering the cost
Also thank you to Rebecca Hudson, Safehouse Signs, for designing and donating all the signage and to Amy Scherer/Scherer Joy Photography for the gift of capturing images to witness the joy, smiles and hugs…Truly special moments!
Volunteers arrived with donations to fill boxes with food and toiletries for the UVA Food Pantry which benefits both students and staff and they were delivered by the “UVA For Good Project”. Each volunteer used their unique gifts and talents to make an impact and made this event again something truly magical.
Finally, thank you to Brenda Miller whose vision for Hoo Needs a Hug will be forever appreciated! Until fall…when the “Hoo Huggers” will again take over Grounds and spread joy and love!
