Yael Grushka-Cockayne will become the first woman permanently appointed to lead the UVA Darden School of Business in its 70-year history, UVA officials announced Monday.

Grushka-Cockayne, a longtime professor and current vice dean of the Darden School, will become the business school’s 10th dean on Aug. 1.

We are proud to share that the University of Virginia has named Yael Grushka-Cockayne as the 10th dean of the Darden School of Business!

The first woman permanently appointed to lead Darden in its 70-year-history, Grushka-Cockayne brings her vast experience as an award-winning teacher, scholar and academic leader at UVA and beyond to begin her term as dean on 1 August.

“Yael is exactly the kind of leader this moment calls for,” said UVA President Scott Beardsley. “She believes deeply in Darden’s student-centered learning model and understands how business education must evolve in a world shaped by data, artificial intelligence and global complexity. That combination of continuity and forward-looking leadership will serve Darden exceptionally well.”

Congratulations to Rhoback co-founders Matthew (MBA ’16) and Kristina Loftus (MBA ’17) on securing a nearly $50 million investment from Champ, a new fund formed by L Catterton and Patricof Co (P/Co) and backed by LVMH and more than 200 professional athletes.

The fund brings together athletes including Tyrese Haliburton, Dak Prescott, Ja’Marr Chase, Cameron Brink and Mike Trout, who participate as both investors and brand partners, supporting Rhoback’s continued growth.

What began as an entrepreneurial venture in Charlottesville has grown into one of the most recognizable names in premium activewear. Congratulations again to Matt and Kristina on this incredible milestone!

A historic $43.4M investment from Kathy and David LaCross (MBA ’78) to the UVA School of Education & Human Development is advancing a new early childhood learning center in Charlottesville — serving children from birth to age five while addressing critical kindergarten readiness gaps.

At Darden, the LaCross family’s philanthropy also established the LaCross Institute for Ethical AI in Business and supported The Forum Hotel, LaCross Botanical Gardens and student housing, shaping both innovation and the Darden experience.

Today, the program is growing rapidly, expanding to Executive and Part-Time MBA students, and aiming to serve more than 100 fellows annually within five years.

Merchant’s journey, from Oracle and Wayfair to startup leadership and nonprofit advocacy, highlights the power of persistence and purpose-driven leadership.
