On Monday April 27th, Maxwell Mitchell will be presenting his Distinguished Major Project in Music in Old Cabell Hall from 6:30-8.

The electronic-based album was written, composed, and produced by Maxwell and features many fellow UVA singers and instrumentalists. The project, titled “The Artificial Age,” centers around Maxwell’s thoughts on artificial intelligence and escapism, taking the listener to an imagined world of the not-so-distant future.

The event is free and open to the public!

The University of Virginia Department of Music is pleased to present the fourth-year recital and independent study project of Jack Ireland this Monday.

This special performance will feature six original jazz arrangements of traditional church hymns chosen by Ireland from the Episcopal Hymnal 1982. Blending the rich harmonic language and improvisational spirit of jazz with the familiarity and reverence of hymn traditions, the program offers a fresh and personal reinterpretation of sacred music.

Over Spring Break, many of our UVA Music faculty and students traveled to and performed in Hungary!

Led by Program Director Daniel Sender, UVA students and faculty enjoyed a week of immersive cultural activities in Hungary during Spring Break. In addition to historical sightseeing tours, the group engaged with folk music and dance, opera, and Hungarian classical music.

A mid-week visit to partner institution, the University of Pécs, featured a collaboration between students and music faculty with seven Hungarian musicians in a joint performance in the beautiful Liszt Ferenc Concert Hall. A second performance, in the grand atrium of the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, featured a duo by performance faculty members Prof. Kelly Sulick and Prof. Ayn Balija, as well as two Hungarian works performed by Prof. Daniel Sender and outstanding student pianist Lauren Kim.

This trip was part of the embedded study abroad course, UVA in Hungary: Experiencing Hungarian Music and Cultural History, and represents the latest project of an ongoing partnership between UVA and Hungarian institutions. Started in 2018 by Prof. Sender, this flourishing partnership continues to create cross-cultural programs that impact communities both at home and abroad.

Congratulations to Professor Leah Reid and PhD students Lawton Hall and Varun Kishore on presenting new works as part of the University of Georgia’s New Music Festival that happened on February 13-14!

Professor Reid was also the featured composer at the festival. Four of her works were performed, Sk(etch) was featured at the Georgia Museum of Art, and she presented a talk titled The Colors of Timbre.

Additionally, Leah Reid is a recipient of the 2025 University of Virginia Research Achievement Awards, honored with the Award for Excellence in the Arts & Humanities!

Pooja Viswesh is a remarkable multi-faceted artist and music major. She just released an album titled “The Destination”, available for streaming now on Spotify and Apple Music! Read what Pooja has to say about the album:
“This album release is an extension of my Distinguished Majors Program project. My goal was to create a collection of songs that ranged across various genres in an attempt to reach the point of introspection for different people. Depending on where we grew up, our friends and families, experiences we were exposed to, and who we become every day, different types of music bring us to a closer understanding of ourselves. Similarily, meditative music doesn’t look the same for everyone. With this in mind, I put my spin on 10 different genres.”
