Chattanooga CARES and East Tennessee State University Center of Excellence, both AIDS Service Organizations (ASO) have partnered together to establish STEP TN which will provide safe disposal of needles and syringes, HIV and Hepatitis testing linkage to treatment, education about overdose prevention, and referrals to substance abuse, mental health, and social services throughout Southeast and East

Tennessee. Syringes discarded in public places reduced by almost 50%
Access to clean syringes reduce HIV infection rates by 80%
Injection drug users are 5 times more likely to seek treatment
Crime is reduced by over 10% by providing linkage to care
Needle sticks among law enforcement is significantly reduced.
