Shay Smith, a 2020 graduate of UTC’s Master of Public Health program, was recently nominated for the State of Tennessee’s Governor’s Excellence in Service Award for her work as a Healthy Development Coordinator with the Tennessee Department of Health. In this role, she engages in cross-sector collaboration to address social and environmental determinants of health and helps administer state funded healthy built environment grants that support community capital improvements and planning initiatives in the south central region. She also oversees community engagement activities, conducts evaluations, delivers presentations on the connection between health and the built environment, and contributes to grant development to advance rural health and community wellbeing.
The Governor’s Excellence in Service Awards began in 2016 to recognize outstanding state employees who are at the forefront of improving the way Tennessee State Government delivers services. The employees selected by their department’s leaders are helping provide Tennessee taxpayers with the highest quality service at the lowest possible cost. Way to go Shay! šŸŽ‰

We are very proud of our faculty member Ms. Emily Maddux and MPH student Hadyn Tjornhom for their outstanding work on the Mocs Wellness Initiative. Their leadership and dedication reflect the impact of public health in action and the meaningful difference our faculty and students are making on campus and in the community.

On a weekday afternoon inside the Aquatic and Recreation Center, a group of UTC employees moves through a workout they didn’t design on their own. They’re not guessing at exercises. They’re not following a generic plan. And they’re not doing it alone. Instead, they’re working with a team.

We are honored to have her as part of our MPH program and look forward to her continued success.

MPH students in the Health Promotion & Communication Strategies course had a semester-long group project with our community partner, Volunteers In Medicine (VIM), to educate their patient groups with specific health conditions. They did such a great job in their final presentation with very exciting and creative ideas. After wrapping up their presentations, we gathered for this group photo to celebrate their hard work and collaboration throughout the semester. It was a great way to mark the end of the course and recognize the meaningful partnerships and impactful health education materials they developed together! Thank you so much !!!
