HISTORY HEROES

Chloe Anthony Wofford Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford) February 18, 1931 – August 5, 2019), known as Toni Morrison, was an American novelist.

Born and raised in Lorain, Ohio, Morrison graduated from Howard University in 1953 with a B.A. in English. She earned a master's degree in American Literature from Cornell University in 1955. In 1957 she returned to Howard University, was married, and had two children before divorcing in 1964. Morrison became the first black female editor in fiction at Random House in New York City in the late 1960s. She developed her own reputation as an author in the 1970s and '80s. Her work Beloved was made into a film in 1998. Morrison's works are praised for addressing the harsh consequences of racism in the United States.

As a beloved American author, Morrison, embodied a voice for Peace and Justice and her contribution and legacy continue make impacts today.

Alvernia University Philadelphia Campus would like to congratulate Michelle Johnson as a Bruce Cobb Scholarship recipient. Michelle Johnson is a Junior at Alvernia University majoring in Social Work and a minoring in Theology. Michelle is an Administrative Coordinator at Net Treatment Services. She assists families in the foster care system with reconnecting with one another and providing services relevant to the outcome of their circumstances. She believes that Alvernia exhibits the core
values essential to a happy and successful life.

Michelle began her educational journey in August 2019; she chose Alvernia for its commitment to student success, small class sizes, and personal care. She moved back to the Philadelphia area from Washington, DC, in 2015 to make a fresh start. She has excelled in her educational journey, maintaining a GPA of 3.543, dean’s list honoree, President of the Social Work Club, and induction into the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Honor Society in 2020.
Michelle attributes her achievements to the robust support system she has built around her and her mentor. 🎓🎓 Congratulations Michelle.
