We are so excited to announce the upcoming event that our club is co-sponsoring: Women at EWU - STEM Symposium (WE-STEM) to be held on March 6th and 7th at Eastern Washington University @easternwashingtonuniversity

Registration opens for EWU students THIS Friday, Jan. 17th and for EWU faculty and staff on Feb 1st.

We have a great event planned including an educational matinee of EWU's production of Silent Sky and a keynote address from Rebecca Long @amaya30 who is an EWU alumna and the president/founder of the Spokane non-profit, Future Ada @futureada

There will be opportunities to present your research and work during oral and poster sessions. In addition, there will be panel sessions that will discuss the intersection of gender and the STEM fields.

If your club, program, or department would like to table at the event or would like to lead a breakout activity please indicate that during registration.

Immunization Requirements

Hey Eags! Help us protect our Eagle community and submit your MMR documents on Med+Proctor by October 23, 2019. Those who do not meet this new policy requirement will not be able to register for winter classes. Visit ewu.edu/immunizations for steps to upload your documents and more information.

Beginning Fall 2019, the Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees passed a policy which requires all students to show verification of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunity. Satisfying this public health requirement will allow you to register for classes.

Byrne's Euclid

For almost 2000 years, Euclid's Elements was *the* textbook used to teach geometry and number theory. In 1847, Oliver Byrne created a color-coded version of the first six books of Euclid's elements. Byrne's version has become famous for its artistic style. Now, Nicholas Rougeux has recreated all six books of Byrne's version online, with interactive diagrams.

The books are here: https://www.c82.net/euclid/
The story of making it is here: https://www.c82.net/blog/?id=79

Managing and analyzing large complex #datasets is no easy task — it requires complicated #mathematics and has challenged researchers for years. In the current issue of SIAM News, Per-Gunnar Martinsson describes two randomized algorithms designed to help process large datasets in high-dimensional spaces. https://sinews.siam.org/Details-Page/randomized-projection-methods-in-linear-algebra-and-data-analysis

In order to study complex geometric shapes, tropical geometers break the shapes down into simple stick-like models. What they’ve found using these models may provide clues to a century-old puzzle.

Happy Hump Day! For this Chippewas Everywhere, we'd like to highlight Michael Winer '08.

Michael works endlessly to challenge the struggles many students have surrounding mathematics. His Masters and PhD work was done at Ohio State University under prestigious mathematics professor, Dr. Michael Bautista. After graduating, he taught three years of mathematics at Lima Senior High School in Lima, Ohio. His doctoral research focused on student understanding of geometric proofs, a topic he plans to continue pursuing in order to help students become more comfortable with that difficult topic. He was hired as a tenure track assistant professor of mathematics at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington where he teaches elementary mathematics content courses to pre-student and student teachers.

The Seattle Times discusses the long term effects of teaching kids to memorize math, instead of problem solving skills. The author laments that math education keeps emphasizing memorizing facts, rather than building concepts and understanding:

ICYMI: In an epiphany while brushing his teeth, retired German statistician Thomas Royen proved the Gaussian correlation inequality, a famous 60-year-old conjecture that links geometry, probability theory and statistics. But in an age of easy global communication, Royen’s proof went unrecognized for years.

This seems like magic, but it’s just Fourier transforms (expressing a function as a sum of periodic functions). Which are a kind of magic, I admit. https://t.co/zbrGppYcxU
