Today we had our first annual Biology Social! Faculty brought biology-themed food and Dr. Ende prepared three rounds of trivia (complete without professor baby pictures!), a game of microcentrifuge tube telephone, and a relay race with PPE and waders. The winning team got hand-macramed jellyfish courtesy of Dr. Rinehimer. It was a wonderful afternoon of fun and community. Here's to a new annual tradition!

Our final featured Tropical Ecology student research project is a hummingbird behavior project developed by Dru and Eleanor. They are asking questions related to how sugar concentration and flower color affect foraging decisions made by hummingbirds at porterweed plants. The most common species at the flowers, the rufous-tailed hummingbird, also happened to build a nest in a nearby porterweed bush! Bonus!

Tropical Ecology student project 4: Victoria and Sydney!

Victoria and Sydney are working on a project that they designed to test how leaf-cutter ants respond to disturbance of their pheromone trail. In one condition, the surface soil is entirely removed while in the control, the soil is lifted and replaced with minimal disturbance. Tropical Ecology student project 3!

Gabby and Jess have developed a project to examine the effectiveness of mammal and avian seed dispersers near fruiting trees. They've spent many hours scouting for sites and have designed eight collection sheets to collect droppings from bats and birds moving through the environment. Once collected, they will extract any seeds and compare them to the seed reference bank currently under development.

Tropical Ecology research projects are starting!

The first group to be featured is Lori and Justin who are studying how canopy cover affects attempted predation on aposematic and cryptic-colored model frogs. By using clay models, Justin and Lori will be able to determine the rate of attempted predation by visual predators on frogs of varying color contrast. The "Frog Factory" is open for business!

It's hard to believe, but we are in our last week of classes in the fall semester. Today was a highlight where we got to celebrate our students completing their fall SCEs. It's always such a joy to learn from our students and celebrate the successful conclusion of a major checkpoint on the way towards graduation.
