Faculty Spotlight:

Rahat Choudery, ambassador for Students of Color, wanted to make sure that we gave this special professor a shout of for the month of October.
Here is what she said:
"Most professors choose to engage the class in icebreakers and spend (sometimes too much) time going over the syllabus before starting material on the first day of class. This professor, however, chose to take a few extra minutes on the first day of class to prioritize something he finds very important. Shoutout to Professor Wilson for bringing attention to inclusion in Computer Science to all of his students on the first day of class! With the lack of diversity being a serious issue in the Computer Science field, we need more people like Professor Wilson to spread the word and assure us all that people of any gender, race, religion, and other underrepresented groups can code!"

When Professor Wilson was asked to respond to this nomination here is what he said:
"One of the joys of teaching a distribution class is that most students I get haven't imagined themselves doing computer science. I get to show them that they really can! Like with math anxiety, we end up forming pictures of what sort of person a programmer is---what they're interested in, what they look like, maybe even what they like to eat. We have a picture of their gender and skin color. Then a lot of people conclude that a programmer just isn't them. It's really rewarding to be able to push back against that and help students discover that, contrary to any stereotypes, they can do this, they can be good at it, and it can be fun."

Girija Ganeshan, Ambassador of International Students, and Rahat Choudery, ambassador of Student of Color, collaborated with Kent House RA's. Danitha Isma and Justin Yerkie are both RA's of Kent House and hosted a night with residents that consisted of open discussions and activities that helped students talk about cultural socioeconomic differences.

Thank you Danitha, Justin, Rahat and Girija for your hard work and dedication!

Rhoda Oluwalana, our Ambassador of Socio Economic Students, has been busy this past month. Along with three other RA's, Rhoda teamed up to put on a Privileged and Deprived Relay. They gathered on the Kent Lawn and they asked students a series of questions that either advanced them in the relay or restricted them from getting towards the finish line. This activity allowed the students that participated to get insight into other peoples lives and make them aware of their peers struggles or successes and to bring them together because of it.

Thank you Rhoda and the rest of the RA's that helped put this amazing event on!

Congrats to Jada Aristilde for her very first event as the First Generation Ambassador for Intercultural Affairs!

When Jada was asked to talk a little about this event, here is what she said:
"I had the pleasure of tabling on behalf of intercultural affairs as the First generation Ambassador. With the help from my fellow Ambassadors: Rahat Choudery and Paris Mercier, we scouted for potential first generations students here at Washington college. Amazingly not many students knew what a first generation student was exactly, or even if they qualified. Luckily we came prepared with our "Be proud to be F1rst" informational handout that helped to clarify things. In addition, our first generation prospects took a quick survey. Afterwards, if the prospect identified there self as First generation they received a customized Intercultural affairs bag, filled with a "First-gen" T-shirt, a cardbuddy, pens and other goodies. Here are a few friendly First generation faces I had the pleasure of meeting on Friday!"

Please enjoy this short slide show with visuals of some of the goodies each of these lovely individuals received!
