Congratulations to our students in the Electric Boat Team at Washington College for another successful year competing at Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) in Virginia Beach! Washington College is currently the top college in the nation, the only school to lead in one category (1st place in Manned Displacement class) and place in another class (3rd place in Manned Planing class).

Here's an article just released by Chesapeake Bay Magazine that highlights the accomplishment.

Electric boat models (and motors) are gaining momentum at boat shows and on the water—now the industry is turning its attention to the next generation of

Congratulations to the Washington College Electric Boat Team for yesterday’s 2nd and 4th place the Promoting Electric Propulsion national competition! This was no small feat!

Last summer we modified our marathon design electric boat to compete at PEP in their collegiate electric boat 5-mile sprint competition and took the 16 competitors by surprise when we left with first place.

In the past 9 months, our team has worked tirelessly to construct a new hull, build an integral 144v 43kWh lithium battery, and build a 42kW outboard motor (about 57HP). We took these two boats to Norfolk to compete yesterday with the now expanded 27 collegiate teams.

Just to make it on site with a functional boat is a huge feat. Some universities opted not to make the long journey to the race since their boats still had issues to resolve. Other teams, like University of Michigan and Princeton University, brought multiple boats.

Cole Davis ‘26 skippered our existing 18’ wood-hulled runabout (powered by a custom 48v 14kWh LiFePO4 battery spinning a custom 5kW motor). Cole took 4th place overall in the manned competitions!

Douglas Hewes ‘26 skippered our new 23’ carbon fiber and fiberglass trimaran. In the final manned heat of the day, Douglas managed to edge out the competition and took 1st place, beating all previous records by any other college to date!

Princeton ran their hydrofoils earlier in the day and had to be towed in after breakdowns to their fast but delicate systems. There was a surprise (unscheduled) 2nd attempt by Princeton, the only team to be given multiple opportunities to re-run the same boats, including the large hydroplane they converted to electric with the help of their Flux Marine sponsor’s proprietary motor systems. They managed to keep it together this time and took back first place topping out at over 70mph!

Regardless of the controversial conclusion, Washington College did an AMAZING job. Our boats were clearly the best combination of speed and reliability, and what the competitors don’t realize is that we finished the races with 80% of our battery remaining (since we deigned to be able to do marathons racing as well).

Please join me in congratulating the entire team and recognizing the combined hundreds of hours of hard work that led us to our victory.

🎯 Our students aren’t just jumping in a boat and hammering a throttle to win a race. The team designed and built all the custom systems, including a new unique trimaran hull, giving them an invaluable experiential intersection between the theoretical and practical aspects surrounding naval achitecfure and marine electric propulsion systems.

Let me reiterate this in the most clear terms… Comparatively, with 27 colleges and universities representing, some having upwards of 75 undergraduate and graduate students on a team with seemingly limitless resources, our small yet mighty high performance team is most definitely making waves as we remain at the top of the standings for the second year!

We made the journey down to Norfolk, VA today in preparation for the 4th annual Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) collegiate competition! Stay tuned as we compete with 27 colleges and universities from around the country, racing electric boats that we design and build at WAC!

We're in the final weeks preparing for the Promoting Electric Propulsion collegiate competition (held by the American Society of Naval Engineers). Can't believe how much we've accomplished and how far we've come since the fall!

In June we defend our current title of 2022 National Champions. With 27 colleges and universities competing, we've got our work cut out for us!

The Electric Boat Team at Washington College wants to thank Total Boat for the donation of epoxy, as well as the nice discount for the additional purchases and supplies we needed to build our new electric trimaran!

As the reigning national champions of the American Society of Naval Engineers PEP race (Promoting Electric Propulsion), we know there is a target on our backs as we head into this seasons races. Total Boat is making it possible to put together a new hull that can handle the massively more powerful electric motor and lithium battery we are building.

Come see us in our first race of the season right here in Chestertown on Earth Day, April 22nd! We’re hosting a electric boat regatta on the Chester River right in from of the boathouse and pavilion. http://wacElectricBoat.com

Electric Boat Team Update!

Last night after meeting in IDEAWORKS to discuss the 3 planned stages in developing our autonomy, discussing our mid-year update report to the American Society of Naval Engineers, a handful of the team went on to refine the three battery bulkhead panels.

Rather than glassing them in and then awkwardly working out the window/ports with waterproof seals, we did all the precision work up front. Now when they go in, all the polycarbonate windows should line up perfectly.

Today we were ready to receive our FedEx shipment of raw LiFePO4 cells from our supplier in China. Douglas came to the rescue with his truck and then also loaded and unloaded every 50lb box. Considering the number of times he had to pick each up, he lifted a total of 2600lbs in the course of 45 minutes. Douglas is going to be ripped by the time our race rolls around 🙌💪

Spent a late night cranking through some promo water bottles for and gave an overview for a few students, three of which made their own impromptu designs and etched their water bottle on the spot.

Loving this ThunderLaser and all it enables us to do!!
