Rising senior Lauren Woods is a Design Engineering Intern at SRAM in Spearfish, South Dakota. This summer, she has been utilizing 3D modeling, finite element analysis, and the machine shop to design bicycle components and test procedures. Specifically, she’s working on the next generation of dropper seatposts and power meters, and enjoys biking on local trails to try out new components. Great job, Lauren!

Rising sophomore Sarah Hobbie is spending her summer as a Human Factors Engineering Intern at Medtronic in Boston, Massachusetts. As a member of the User Research and Analytics team within the Surgical Operating Unit, she supports early-stage robotic surgery research through user-centered design activities, technical documentation, and usability research. She has contributed to her team’s understanding of user needs and clinical workflows while also developing a deeper understanding of engineering in the medical device industry. Keep it up, Sarah!

Rising junior David Slavtcheff is an Operations, Outreach, and Engineering Intern at Metro Mobility in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Metro Mobility provides affordable eBike rentals to low-income residents of the greater Boston area through a docked bikeshare model. David has been working to keep bikes on the street through repairs, tech support, and customer outreach. He has also been developing a machine that tests batteries for health to prevent sudden losses of power during riding. He even got to briefly model for their parent company, Montague Bikes! Good work, David.

Faculty in the news! With Dr. Catherine Hoar (BC) as the lead PI and Dr. Siddhartan Govindasamy (BC), Dr. Avneet Hira (BC), and Dr. Andrea Silverman (NYU) as Co-PIs, Boston College’s Engineering Department has been awarded a three-year, $328,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will be used to study hyperlocal flooding and rainfall sensor development in urban settings while also promoting interest in and pathways to the field of engineering among undergraduate and middle school students. Together, they’re spreading human-centered problem solving beyond BC classrooms.

Rising sophomore Sarah Bland is a Bio-computational Research Intern at Rockefeller University in New York, New York. This summer, she has been studying the biology of fibrolamellar carcinoma, a rare pediatric liver cancer, through a computational lens with the aim of developing a better disease tracking system and achieving a greater understanding of the structure of the cells that make up FLC tumors.
