Congratulations, Juliano!

Associate Instructional Professor Juliano Saccomani has been featured on Champions of Learning, a platform by IDEA Illinois that elevates educator voices and highlights the great work happening across the state!

Through his innovative Virtual Reality project at the University of Chicago, Dr. Saccomani brings the Lusophone world into the classroom, allowing students to virtually visit locations explored throughout the course.

His project received the 2025 MAFLT LCTL Innovation Award, recognizing innovation in less commonly taught languages.

🇧🇷 Feliz Dia da Independência do Brasil! 🇧🇷

Today, September 7, Brazil celebrates its Independence Day.

On September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro, the son of the Portuguese king and then Prince Regent of Brazil, declared Brazil’s independence from Portugal. According to the traditional account, he proclaimed “Independência ou Morte!” (“Independence or Death!”) along the banks of the Ipiranga River in São Paulo.

The process of independence was shaped by Brazil’s complex colonial history, political changes in Portugal and Brazil, and conflicts that continued even after the declaration. Brazil officially became an independent empire, with Dom Pedro becoming Emperor Pedro I.

Today, 7 de setembro is an opportunity to celebrate Brazil’s history, culture, language, and incredible diversity.

💚💛💙 Feliz 7 de setembro! 💚💛💙
