Last week, DePaul Law students and alumni joined the Office of Professional & Career Development, the Center for Public Interest Law and the Public Interest Law Association for an engaging discussion with the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) about paid public interest summer internships.

PILI works to engage, inspire and empower those advancing equal access to justice. Through its Law Student Internship Program, PILI funds law students working at public interest law organizations in Cook County and across Illinois, while providing educational, networking and mentoring opportunities.

Panelists Alex Schumacher, PILI program associate; Katie Nail, a third-year student and 2026 PILI intern at Chicago Volunteer Legal Services; and alumnus Michael Hoyt (JD`20), managing attorney with the Children’s Protection Project at National Immigrant Justice Center and a PILI alum, shared insights from their experiences. They discussed internship highlights and how law students can help legal aid organizations expand access to justice and serve more clients.

Student in DePaul’s Croak Community Legal Clinic partnered with CARPLS to support exonerees at ABC Reentry’s inaugural Wrongful Conviction Day Resource Fair & Celebration, hosted by Loevy & Loevy. The event brought together organizations and professionals to connect returning citizens with legal assistance, housing, employment, health care, mental health support and other essential reentry resources. DePaul Law students helped prepare and execute powers of attorney, contributing to this collaborative effort to support exonerees as they rebuild their lives. ,

Congratulations to DePaul Law Professor Valerie Koch, director of the Mary & Michael Jaharis Health Law Institute, on her selection as a 2026–2027 Wicklander Fellow!

Koch was selected for her research exploring informed legal consent and related questions in medical ethics. Her proposal was recognized for its potential to inform important discussions beyond academia at the intersection of law, ethics, healthcare and professional practice.

The fellowship, awarded by DePaul’s Institute for Business & Professional Ethics, provides financial support for her research and opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship and dialogue on pressing ethical issues.

DePaul Law student Allison Barberena (JD `27), who works with the International Human Rights Law and Asylum & Immigration Law clinics, recently traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, to learn from Nontsasa Nyovane, founder of Siyakhathala, a nonprofit supporting 550 children through after-school care, meals and community programs.

Nyovane is one of three finalists for the Opus Prize, a $1 million faith-based humanitarian award that recognizes unsung heroes advancing solutions to persistent social problems. Hosted by DePaul University this year, the prize celebrates the power of compassion and community-driven change.

Allison’s experience highlights how DePaul Law can connect its legal expertise with grassroots efforts to advance justice and support vulnerable communities around the world.

Karl says, “This National Coming Out Day, OUTlaw's celebrates the courage, pride and individuality of LGBTQ+ members within the DePaul community.

“This day carries special weight, especially right now. As our community faces renewed threats to its rights across the country, we honor the legal leaders who once fought to secure those rights and for the allies who made space for us where none existed before. Their work is the reason so many of us can live openly today, and it reminds us why our own work as future lawyers matters.

Congratulations to The Honorable Susan Lorraine Kennedy Sullivan (JD ’94), circuit judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, who was honored as the Catholic Lawyer of the Year by the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago.

The award recognizes a Catholic lawyer who brings Christ to the world through the practice of law and exemplifies the Gospel through service to the bench, bar and public, especially those in need.

DePaul Law welcomes University of Chicago Law School Professor Curtis Bradley as the 2026 Enlund Scholar-in-Residence.

In his lecture, “Glossing the Foreign Affairs Constitution,” Professor Bradley will explore how congressional and executive branch practices have shaped foreign affairs constitutional law for more than 230 years, including what that history means for current controversies involving tariffs, Greenland and the conflict with Iran.

After filing for divorce, Diana turned to CVLS for help resolving child custody and support issues and moving her case forward. Through CVLS’s partnership with the DePaul Family Law Clinic, law student Joie Egizio, supervised by CVLS attorneys Phil Mohr and Rob Zielinski, helped Diana finalize her divorce and secure support for her sons so she could focus on the next chapter of her life.
