Saturday, we hosted our Minding Our Business mental health event at the Maze Branch, Oak Park Public Library. This event was centered on making space and showing up for you! 💚

From pouring into your own cup to reflecting through letters to self, the focus was on what it really means to take care of you—your peace, your capacity, and your healing.

We created space for real conversations, intentional reflection, and the kind of accountability that starts within.

And at the end, we also took a moment to discuss grief and acknowledge our sister 🩷

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that the Tau Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, honors the life and legacy of our dear sister, Barbara Deer, who transitioned on April 14, 2026. Barbara was the embodiment of grace, kindness, and unwavering dedication, serving our sisterhood with distinction on various committees and documenting our chapter’s history as our Ivy Leaf Reporter. Her warmth was a constant light in our sisterhood, and her caring spirit touched every person she met, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.

Beyond her commitment to our sisterhood, Barbara was a pillar of the Chicago community. She was a dedicated Speech-Language Pathologist for Chicago Public Schools, where she spent her career advocating for children and empowering them with the gift of communication. A passionate activist at heart, her leadership was instrumental in spearheading Juneteenth for the state of Illinois, ensuring that the legacy of freedom and culture would be honored for generations to come. Her life was a testament to the power of service and the impact of a dedicated heart.

While she gave so much of herself to the public, Barbara’s greatest pride and joy remained her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother whose love and devotion were the foundation of her life. As Barbara transitions to an Ivy Beyond the Wall, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire us all. We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to her family and loved ones during this time. Rest in peace, Sister Barbara; your service to all mankind will never be forgotten.
