The College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean is sweating to support our students, but he needs your help!

Saturday, August 15th, Dean Tim Libretti will lace up his running shoes and take on the Corrida del Mariachi 5K in Berwyn to raise money for student research projects and creative activities in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Last year, Dean Libretti’s sweat equity inspired more than $2,000 in donations to support CAS students. This year, Dean Libretti is raising the stakes by personally matching every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 in donations!

So don’t let him get off easy. MAKE HIM PAY! Donate here: https://www.neiu.edu/academics/colleges-departments/arts-and-sciences/cusp-college-undergraduate-scholars-program

With your donation, we can kick off our annual fundraising efforts to support our students. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to fund student research and creative activities. These are transformational experiences that allow our students to showcase their considerable talents and share those talents with the larger community.

Of course, you are also welcome to register for the race here (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/corrida-del-mariachi-5k-run-2026-tickets-1986712230763) and run alongside Dean Libretti to help raise funds.

Let’s make a difference for our students!

Join Dr. Jesse Self this fall in JUST 305: The Carceral State. In this course, you'll consider current events as well as historical ones, and you'll examine the relationship between punishment and various criminalized identities. You'll extend your understanding of mass incarceration and the current state of the criminal legal system. And you'll come away from this course with an invaluable new perspective on everything happening around us--one that you can use in your career, or simply as a means to be a more informed citizen of the world.

Congratulations to Dr. Joshua Salzmann for providing essential historical analyses that were used to argue a case in the U.S. Supreme Court!

Historical studies skills can be used in all kinds of contexts and situations. In Dr. Salzmann's case, his innovative approach to using historical information and crafting sound arguments allowed him to be a critical player in shaping the state's successful defense of public safety regulations in the landmark federal lawsuit, Schoenthal v. Raoul.

Last week, NEIU's Mural Painting course, led by Instructor Chantala Kommanivanh, unveiled a new mural, titled “Together We Shine,” at Chicago Public Schools’ Stephen K. Hayt Elementary School. The mural celebrates cross-educational collaboration and the power of public art to bring communities together.

“The missions of Hayt Elementary and Northeastern are similar in that both schools want students to feel welcomed, supported and given the resources they need to be successful,” said Chair of the Department of Art + Design Kim Ambriz. “One of the many reasons this project is so great is because Northeastern students were able to understand the culture and young students at Hayt. Now, Chantala and the Northeastern students who worked on this mural can take pride in knowing that young people and employees at Hayt will pass this piece of art each day and may be inspired by what they’ve created.”

“Our goal at Hayt is to create a welcoming environment that reflects our student body,” said Hayt Elementary’s Principal Chris Twomey. “We are grateful for this wonderful opportunity and partnership with Northeastern Illinois University. This mural beautifies our school while sending a meaningful message. The mural, 'Together We Shine,' perfectly captures what we strive to accomplish every day at Hayt, that we are a community that rises together.”
