IPRO 313 - Refuelable Electric Car

IPRO 313 - Refuelable Electric Car If you are interested in our project, spread the word about our project and join our IPRO team next An improvement in transportation is a benefit to all!

This IPRO is designing, building, and testing electric vehicles powered by zinc-air fuel cells (ZAFCs). The majority of electric and hybrid vehicles produced commercially are powered with lithium ion batteries or nickel-metal hydride batteries. The research community is currently intrigued about hydrogen fuel cells and super-capacitors. The team at IIT chooses to explore an alternative to both, ZA

FCs. A ZAFC reacts zinc with oxygen to produce electricity which then powers an electric motor. The two ingredients are brought together in a chamber called a fuel cell to react. Because oxygen, one-half of the reactants, is freely available in air, the chemistry can be physically compact. In addition, zinc element is abundant, geographically evenly disbursed, recyclable, and maturely developed. ZAFC technology has been researched for decades, and businesses have commercialized them to varying success. Technical and economic challenges remain, and the team at IIT seeks to finish the work started by many great scientists and entrepreneurs.
