Hey guys! During finals week, the east campus library has a "relaxation station" with coloring books and coffee (two of my favorite things)!! It will be there from 12/7 through 12/9 from 5 to 8 pm on the first floor. Sounds like a good incentive to get some studying done :)

Dr. Siobhan Phillips will be presenting at 2:00 on Friday in AHSB 607! "The role of physical activity in the primary and secondary prevention of cancer"... who is going!?

Hello Scientistas! Hope you all had a nice holiday weekend.

Thanks for all your emails of support and interest! We are still looking to fill a couple board member positions ASAP. If you are interested in holding an officer position, please send me an email with your experience, if any, and a little bit about what you'd like to get from and give to the program. No experience is necessary, as long as you have a passion for the program's mission of supporting women in science!

We need to fill the "treasurer" position in order to get approved by campus programs (so before 12/7). We will fill the other positions next semester. For our purposes, your main responsibility would be to help advertise the program and recruit members, contribute to the page, and help coordinate any events. The time commitment is a couple hours per week.

If this is an opportunity that interests you, please send me an email ([email protected]). Thanks!

Nicolette

For those interested in nutrition:

I recently discovered the American College of Nutrition. Check out their web site if you're a fan of scientific research. They have free public videos from past conferences - in 2013 they focused on the Mediterranean diet and antioxidants, in 2014 they focused on the effects of GMOs, and this year they'll be discussing the gut-brain interaction. Really fascinating stuff if you are tired of health bloggers promoting things with no science at all behind them.

For the anatomy fans out there, UIC grad Vanessa Ruiz will be giving a TedMed lecture on biomedical visualization... An intersection of art and science! Pretty cool stuff; check out her blog below. If I've got my facts right, it's Friday from 9:00 - 10:30 in the BVIS student lounge (I think that's on the 5th floor - anyone know for sure?).

There’s something so beautiful about muscle fibers. But we’re used to seeing them in their classic muscle architecture—fusiform, parallel, bipennate, etc. What...

Do you think part of the reason is because women tend not to make it quite as high on the proverbial ladder, whether by choice or not?

"There is no industry where women earn equal to or more than men overall, even when controlling for all measured compensable factors."

A day late, but... what do you think about Hedy Lamarr being more well-known for her acting prowess than her contributions to technology?

Hedy Lamarr was more than just a 1940s Hollywood movie star. She was also an inventor who helped developed technologies that made Wi-Fi possible today.
