We have over 280 faculty and residents in general and advanced specialty clinics including Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. We also have 40+ researchers advancing scientific knowledge to improve oral health outcomes in Chicagoland and across the world. We are dedicated to educating and helping patients adopt healthy oral hygiene habits and make the best decisions to improve their oral health. 🦷 What if one week could inspire a future dentist?

From Aug. 17–21, 45 Chicago-area high school students took part in the UIC College of Dentistry’s Urban Health Program Dental Camp!

Throughout the week, students got an inside look at the dental profession through:

🔬 Hands-on laboratory activities
🧪 Dental and scientific lectures
🦷 Clinical observation
💡 Exposure to technology used in dentistry
🤝 Mentoring and guidance

The camp gave students in grades 9–12 from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to explore dentistry, learn about the role of oral health professionals and discover what a future in the field could look like.

The UHP Dental Camp is part of the college’s commitment to expanding pathways into dentistry and building a more inclusive pipeline of future oral health care professionals.

Who knows? We may have met some future dentists this week! 👏🦷

Dr. Vivian Ha, periodontics resident, was selected to receive the inaugural Patty & Paul Levi Periodontal Resident Research Award from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation. The award recognizes research in preventive periodontology and the oral-systemic link and was expanded in 2026 to include periodontal residents.

In collaboration with Rush University Medical Center, Dr. Ha’s research explores connections between the brain, gut and oral cavity, including how inflammation associated with Parkinson’s disease may be detected in and potentially perpetuated by periodontal pathogens.

Dr. Ha extends her gratitude to the UIC Department of Periodontics and her mentors, Dr. Joel Schwartz, Dr. Afsar Naqvi and Dr. Scott Tomar.

The award will be recognized at the American Academy of Periodontology’s annual meeting in October.

For nearly 300 internally displaced children in Sudan, access to oral health care came directly to their community.

From July 25–29, the Sudan Humanitarian Dental Mission, co-led by Dr. Azza Ahmed, clinical associate professor of pediatric dentistry at the University of Illinois Chicago, and Dr. Nazik Nurelhuda provided oral health care to nearly 300 internally displaced children in Sudan’s Red Sea State.

Conducted in collaboration with the Sudanese American Physicians Association, with Red Sea University serving as a collaborating institution, the mission brought together nearly 70 volunteers to provide dental care and oral health education while supporting clinical training for local dental students and dentists.

The mission also provided a mobile dental chair and a digital X-ray sensor that remained in Sudan, helping local teams extend dental services to displaced communities beyond the mission itself.

More than an effort to address immediate oral health needs, the mission focused on building local capacity and creating sustainable pathways to care for children with limited access to dental services. This initiative marks the beginning of a longer-term effort to expand access to oral health care for displaced communities in Sudan.

What if we could better predict how the body will heal craniofacial bone?

At the University of Illinois Chicago, Dr. Genevieve Romanowicz, assistant professor of oral biology, is taking an important step toward answering that question.

Dr. Romanowicz has received a three-year R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for her project, “Bone-Like Organoids to Understand Factors Controlling Local Bone Immune Response and Regeneration.”

Her research will examine how immune responses influence craniofacial bone healing and explore bone-like organoids as tools to predict and ultimately improve healing outcomes.

This work represents the kind of innovative research that advances our understanding of oral health and opens new possibilities for regenerative medicine.

Last week, the College of Dentistry welcomed 12 congressional staff members representing Illinois’ federal delegations.

During the visit, Dean Rowan shared an overview of the college and highlighted its work in education, research and patient care. She also discussed key issues facing the dental profession before leading a tour of the college’s clinics, laboratories and facilities.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the work happening across UIC Dentistry and connect with leaders who help shape the future of oral health care.

BBC News recently featured the research of Anne George, DDS, MSD, PhD, professor of oral biology, on efforts to regenerate human teeth.

Dr. George studies the proteins that help dentin grow, mineralize and repair itself. She also was part of the team that cloned one of the genes responsible for dentin formation, advancing researchers' understanding of how teeth develop and maintain this tissue. Her research could lead to treatments that enable damaged teeth to regenerate dentin naturally, reducing the need for traditional fillings.

Congratulations to Alison Doubleday, associate professor and director of faculty development; Wendy Cerny, research assistant professor and director of faculty affairs; Aniruddh Narvekar, clinical associate professor; Luma Odeh, clinical assistant professor; and Fatemeh Afshari, clinical professor and chief dental informatics officer, for completing the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE) Peer Observation Protocol Development Program.

This yearlong initiative recognizes faculty committed to advancing teaching excellence through the development of a college-specific peer observation process. Throughout the program, participants explored evidence informed practices, assessed the college's teaching culture and goals, gathered colleague feedback and developed a sustainable peer observation framework tailored to the College of Dentistry.

Their work strengthens a culture of reflective teaching, collaboration and continuous improvement while supporting ongoing faculty development and student success. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement and thank you for your commitment to educational excellence.

On July 17, the department of periodontics hosted the 2026 Bennett Klavan Memorial Lecture, welcoming nearly 100 faculty, residents, students, alumni and colleagues for a day of education and collaboration. The department was honored to welcome keynote speaker Dr. Ernesto Lee, a world renowned dentist, who presented "Next-Gen Periodontal Prosthesis: A Transdisciplinary Rationale for the Restoration and Long-Term Survival of Esthetics and Function," sharing insights into interdisciplinary periodontal care. The event celebrated the legacy of Dr. Bennett Klavan and his lasting impact on periodontal education and mentorship.

Thank you to Dr. Lee and the faculty, residents, students, alumni and guests who helped make this year's Bennett Klavan Memorial Lecture a success.

Recently, Russell Pesavento, DDS, PhD, assistant professor of oral biology, Lin Chen, DDS, PhD, research professor of periodontics, Kassapa Ellepola, BDS, PhD, visiting research assistant professor of oral biology and Hyun Lee, PhD, research associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, have received a two-year, $320,660 R03 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

The project, Cross-Kingdom Assemblage Clearance via Anionic Chondroitin Sulfate Nanohybrid Aggregates, will investigate how anionic chondroitin sulfate-containing hybrid aggregates selectively target Streptococcus mutans-Candida albicans assemblages that contribute to early childhood caries while remaining nontoxic to oral tissues. Led by Dr. Pesavento, the research aims to evaluate a promising approach for preventing tooth decay in young children.
