What's on a Hebrew Bible scholar's summer reading list? Jeffrey Stackert, the Caroline E. Haskell Professor of Hebrew Bible, has two picks in The University of Chicago News's roundup from this year's teaching award winners.

First, Allegra Goodman's 'Intuition': "I love academic novels, and Allegra Goodman's 'Intuition' is better than most." The novel follows the ambitions and uncertainties of a cancer research lab.

Second, Professor Emeritus Bruce Lincoln's 'Secrets, Lies, and Consequences,' a murder mystery that reflects soberly on the twentieth century's worst political offenses. It revisits the 1991 assassination of Ioan Culianu in Swift Hall, and Lincoln taught himself Romanian just to write it.

At Convocation on June 5, we recognized this year's student prize and fellowship winners during the Hooding and Pinning Ceremony at Rockefeller Chapel. Their work this year reached from the Greek of the New Testament to contemporary Jewish prayer, from interfaith exegesis to the future of congregational life. These awards celebrate scholarship, teaching, ministry, interfaith engagement, and writing across the Divinity School. Congratulations to all of our 2026 recipients. Daniela Santillan-Enriquez started at UChicago as a chemistry major. Then she opened the Religious Studies course catalog.

"I was like, 'This is great.' This seems like something I would way more enjoy than chemistry."

She was right.

Now she's graduating with a Religious Studies degree and her sights are set on LGBTQIA+ Catholic ministry. Congratulations, Daniela.

Jea Romiro came to the Divinity School after a pastor pulled him aside and said: "I think you would fit in at the University of Chicago."

He was right.

Eva Fajardo came to UChicago as a human rights major. Then she took a class called "Religion and Politics in a Post-Secular Age," and everything shifted.

Now she's heading to law school to become an immigration attorney, with a Religious Studies degree, the J.Z. Smith Award for Original Research, and a new understanding of what connects us across difference.

Congratulations, Eva.

Anna Zeisel came to the Divinity School drawn to death doula work and chaplaincy, and to the discovery that the MDiv path was open to her as a non-Christian.

Three years later: "I feel so lucky to look around and feel like I know the future of religious leadership in this country."

Every spring, the Undergraduate Program in Religious Studies gathers to celebrate students at UChicago College who've spent a year doing genuinely original work in religious studies. This year's symposium featured thesis presentations from graduating seniors, and the chance to honor two students who stood out even among that exceptional group. Congratulations to Eva Fajardo (Jonathan Z. Smith Award) and Alyssa Manthi (Anne Carr Memorial Award).
