“Psychologists have learned that happiness is really a function not of the intensity of experiences that you have, but rather the frequency of them,” says Chicago Booth’s Nick Epley. “You’ve got to recognize the times when you’re choosing to avoid connecting with others when it would otherwise be rewarding.”

Three Boothies spent their summer expanding their business horizons through the Doing Business in China program. The two-week program, in partnership with Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, included guest speakers, company visits, and cultural immersion activities. It took place across China in Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai.

“I’ve heard about China’s rapid modernization and growth as an economic superpower,” says Weekend MBA student Ivan Chen. “Seeing is believing; I wanted to personally experience how the Chinese are excelling across various sectors like AI, electric vehicles, and internet superapps like Tencent.”

Ivan also appreciated the opportunity to connect with other students in the program, including his fellow Boothies Victoria Li and Mridul Mahesh. The social outings were a highlight, like their spontaneous karaoke night. “I came away with a dozen friends across the globe,” he says. “The diversity of the cohort meant you could learn something from everyone, whether it was the creativity of those fresh out of school or the emotional intelligence of those running a business for decades.”

“The central challenge for all behavioral scientists doing research is you need people to be in your experiments, and you need a lot of them,” says Chicago Booth’s Nicholas Epley.

Mindworks, Booth’s downtown behavioral science center, is helping researchers tackle this challenge.
