The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) and its three Committees - the Committee on Japanese Studies, the Committee on Chinese Studies, and the Committee on Korean Studies - work to enhance opportunities available to scholars both in the United States and abroad, and to foster communication and inter-disciplinary collaboration among the community of professors and students at the University of Ch

icago and throughout the wider East Asian Studies community. To these ends CEAS and its Committees sponsor a variety of activities including colloquia, workshops, conferences, public lectures, film series, cultural events, and other programs that promote understanding of the cultures and societies of China, Japan, and Korea. University of Chicago faculty and programs in East Asian studies regularly achieve the highest rankings among peer institutions in the United States, making East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago an invaluable national resource and a focal point for East Asian Studies in the Midwest.

The Center for East Asian Studies, University of Chicago recently sponsored an introductory and intermediate kuzushiji workshop on campus!

Focusing on the reading of manuscript and print materials inscribed in kuzushiji, this year featured an Intermediate Level Workshop which was held from Friday, August 14th through Monday, August 17th, 2026, followed by a Beginner Level session from August 18th through August 21st.

The instructor of the intermediate level workshop featured Professor Yosh*taka Yamamoto (East Asian Languages & Literatures, Yale University) who introduced intermediate and advanced learners of kuzushiji to letters handwritten in sōrōbun by nineteenth-century Japanese painters and literati, including Matsumura Goshun, Tani Bunchō, and Uragami Shunkin.

Professor Nobuko Toyosawa (Oriental Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences) conducted the beginner level by providing participants with the foundational skills needed to recognize and decipher hentaigana and to begin reading texts written in kuzushiji.

COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER!

Yū Miri, one of Japan’s most acclaimed playwrights and novelists, will present staged readings of her work-in-progress “OBON.”

Based on oral history interviews that Yū and her collaborator Michael Bourdaghs (Robert S. Ingersoll Distinguished Service Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations) have carried out with approximately fifty members of Chicago’s Japanese American community, the play brings together professional actors with community member interviewees to reimagine the multi-generational history of a Japanese American Chicago, including the 20,000 persons who moved to the city from wartime incarceration camps and their descendants, as well as more recent arrivals from Japan and elsewhere.

This program is sponsored by the Center for East Asian Studies, University of Chicago, the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights, and the UChicago Division of the Arts and Humanities.
