Sit-in tomorrow (2/8) at 12PM in room 241.

From

“We are writing to express our concerns regarding an event happening tomorrow at the law school. The Federalist Society is hosting an event on 2/8/23 at 12:00 PM in Room 241 titled "Chatting Freely with Josh Hammer." Josh Hammer is a political commentator known for his racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, and anti-trans rhetoric. We believe that allowing him to speak at the law school is not aligned with DePaul's values and actively contradicts the Vincentian Mission that is central to everything we do at our school. Hosting a speaker who constantly expresses hateful sentiments against marginalized groups sends a message to our students that not everyone is welcome or valued here.

He has called gender-affirming care 'child sterilization', supported the elimination DEl educational programs, pushed for an outright ban on all legal immigration into the United States, advocated for states to deny adults access to trans-affirming medical care, has said that the gender pay gap is caused by women's choices,' and he believes that systematic racism and police brutality are not valid societal concerns. We have included a document of screenshots of several particularly offensive tweets, links to articles that show his hateful speech, articles from the Hate Watch from Southern Poverty Law Center, and links to current events that he is speaking at that continue to perpetuate . . . heinous beliefs.

As student organization leaders, we staunchly denounce these hateful beliefs and the dissemination of harmful rhetoric that directly target countless members of DePaul's faculty and student body. We were put in these positions to protect and speak on behalf of our organization members . . . . DePaul's Vincentian Mission reads, ‘Guided by an ethic of Vincentian personalism and
professionalism, DePaul compassionately upholds the dignity of all members of its diverse, multi-faith, and inclusive community.’ [Allowing Josh Hammer to speak on campus] . . . directly contradicts DePaul's Vincentian Mission.”

Finally, we want to give a shout-out to BLSA President Melinda Oliver [ ] for her remarks at yesterday’s MLK Remembrance event featuring Audra Wilson, CEO of Shriver Center on Poverty Law. Other speakers included Professor Manoj Mate and Racial Justice Fellow Nathan Bennett-Flemming.

As students and future lawyers, we have a role to play in the fight for justice—social, political, criminal, and economic. Some of us may be called to the legal profession for this very reason. Despite your interest area, consider engaging with these key takeaways:

1. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. prescribed that we add an economic bill of rights to the U.S. Constitution. A King-Inspired bill of rights should include a constitutional amendment that enumerates a natural human right to be free from economic poverty, and appropriate enforcement legislation. If you haven’t read the proposed economic bill of rights, give it a google.

2. We should all read A Proper Sense of Priorties—a speech given by Dr. King in Washington, D.C. on February 6, 1968.

3. In the words of Audra Wilson: Be bold, be brave, and speak out.
