Legal education at IIT Chicago-Kent is scholarly yet pragmatic, broad-based yet personalized, demanding yet anything but rigid. ly of fresh ideas to the classroom. Our low student-faculty ratio promotes day-to-day engagement with some of the most influential scholars and teachers in the nation. Our goal is to provide you with a solid grounding in classical legal studies along with the professional skills required to put that knowledge to use. To that end, we place a premium on skills training in a variety of ways: through our formidable legal writing, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy programs, through practicum courses in specialized areas of study, and through practical exercises integrated into many doctrinal classes. You'll also learn the practical side of being a lawyer by working on real cases through externships, through our clinical programs in the Chicago-Kent Law Offices, and via any number of pro bono opportunities you'll find through our Public Interest Resource Center. This is a place where rigorous academics, superior skills training and close interaction with faculty produce a distinctive, personalized approach to your professional education.

Josh Nitch ’27 has already taken his legal education beyond the classroom, gaining experience with real clients, serving his community and exploring the areas of law he hopes to pursue.

At Chicago-Kent, Josh has gained hands-on experience through the Estate Planning, Probate, and Transactional Law Clinic, where he has worked on matters affecting real people and families. At the Daley Center’s Self-Help Resource Center, he also helps community members navigate legal paperwork and an unfamiliar legal system.

These experiences have helped Josh discover a growing interest in transactional law, particularly real estate and private wealth. Now, he’s putting that experience to work as a summer associate at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, where he is continuing to explore the field and prepare for his future career.

Congratulations to Chicago-Kent alumnus and Adjunct Professor Scott M. Curran (’01) on the release of his new book, "Better Good."
Drawing on 25 years of experience across law, philanthropy, nonprofits, business, and public service, Curran offers a practical framework for creating greater impact with the time, talent, resources, relationships, and passions we already have.
Curran brings these ideas into the classroom through his Chicago-Kent course, Social Impact Law, where students explore how lawyers can use their skills and careers to strengthen organizations and communities working to make a difference.
"Better Good" is available wherever books are sold. Even better, 100 percent of the author’s net proceeds benefit the organizations featured in the book.

Congratulations to Olivia (Villamagna) Staib (LAW 3rd Year) on being named the recipient of Chicago Women in Intellectual Property (ChiWIP)’s 2026 Scholarship for the Advancement of Women+ in Law or STEM Graduate Studies! 🎉
A former human factors and systems engineer at Collins Aerospace, Olivia is combining her STEM background with her legal education to build a career in intellectual property law—with a commitment to social justice along the way.
ChiWIP recognized Olivia for her vision to use her interdisciplinary background to advocate for a more humane, innovative, and just society. Her journey is also a testament to the value of Chicago-Kent’s alumni and employer network, which has helped her gain hands-on IP experience at Banner Witcoff and McDermott Will & Schulte.

What happens when your passion becomes the foundation for your profession?
For Chicago-Kent alumna Naomi Frisch ’18, a career as a professional oboist led her to law and ultimately to a career advocating for the workers who make music possible.
After experiencing collective bargaining firsthand as a musician, Naomi attended Chicago-Kent to pursue labor and employment law. Today, she is a shareholder at Asher, Gittler & D’Alba, Ltd., where she represents employees and unions, including musicians, police, and other workers.
She continues to perform with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra while serving as legal counsel to the Chicago Federation of Musicians and the Regional Orchestra Players Association. Her experience as a musician gives her a unique perspective on the challenges workers face and continues to drive her commitment to fair treatment and worker protections.

A single opportunity can change the direction of your career.
Daniel Canales '08 never expected an internship in human resources to lead him to labor and employment law. That experience sparked a new passion and ultimately shaped a career dedicated to helping organizations navigate complex workplace challenges while keeping people at the center of every solution.
At Chicago-Kent School of Law, Daniel found a program that blended legal theory with practical experience. Coursework, internships, and faculty mentorship gave him the perspective and skills to understand every side of labor and employment law, preparing him to build a collaborative approach that continues to define his work today.
Now a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig, LLP and an adjunct professor at Northwestern University, Daniel is helping clients solve today's workplace challenges while preparing tomorrow's legal professionals.

The Bears' potential move to Arlington Heights is more than a sports story. It raises important questions about public money, private development, and the future of Illinois communities.

Illinois Tech Assistant Professor of Law Lucien Ferguson breaks down the legal issues surrounding major economic development projects, including how they can create jobs, expand the tax base, and support public education, while also raising questions about whether public resources are serving the public interest.

Under the Illinois Constitution's Public Purpose Doctrine, public money can only be spent for public purposes. Ferguson explains how heavily private-focused development deals could face legal challenges if the public benefits are not sufficiently balanced.
