Legal education at IIT Chicago-Kent is scholarly yet pragmatic, broad-based yet personalized, demanding yet anything but rigid. There's an energy to the law school that derives partly from our proximity to Chicago's fast-paced legal community and partly from the caliber of the people here and their passion for their work. Faculty scholarship fuels our academic enterprise and brings a constant supply of fresh ideas to the classroom. Our low student-faculty ratio promotes day-to-day engagement with some of the most influential scholars and teachers in the nation. Our goal is to provide you with a solid grounding in classical legal studies along with the professional skills required to put that knowledge to use. To that end, we place a premium on skills training in a variety of ways: through our formidable legal writing, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy programs, through practicum courses in specialized areas of study, and through practical exercises integrated into many doctrinal classes. You'll also learn the practical side of being a lawyer by working on real cases through externships, through our clinical programs in the Chicago-Kent Law Offices, and via any number of pro bono opportunities you'll find through our Public Interest Resource Center. This is a place where rigorous academics, superior skills training and close interaction with faculty produce a distinctive, personalized approach to your professional education.

Chicago-Kent College of Law Professor Sarah Fackrell’s research has now been cited by a federal judge for the third time since August 2025. Her latest citation came in CJB Global Imports, Inc. v. Schedule ‘A’ Defendants, where U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald cited Fackrell’s research on “Schedule A” litigation.

Fackrell’s work examines the challenges these cases present for defendants, judges and the legal system, including requests to freeze defendants’ assets before they are notified of a lawsuit.

When legal scholarship makes its way into the courtroom, it can shape how new questions are understood.

Chicago-Kent College of Law Professor Sarah Fackrell’s 2024 paper, “Uncreative Designs,” was recently cited by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Rochon in Shunock v. Apple, Inc., a case involving Apple Watch Activity Ring designs and questions surrounding intellectual property.

Fackrell, co-director of Chicago-Kent’s Intellectual Property Program, says she is honored when her work helps judges navigate novel legal questions. Her scholarship has also been cited in other federal court decisions, including a 2025 case in the Northern District of Illinois.

Congratulations to Chicago-Kent College of Law Professor Daniel Martin Katz on being named one of the 2026 Top 50 Legal Innovators in Academia!
Published by National Law Review and Wickard, the list recognizes educators and academic leaders working to modernize legal education.
As director of Chicago-Kent’s Law Lab, Katz has spent more than a decade exploring the intersection of law, technology and entrepreneurship. His interdisciplinary work includes research on artificial intelligence and legal reasoning, including the widely cited study "GPT-4 Passes the Bar Exam."
This recognition highlights his ongoing contributions to preparing future attorneys for a legal profession shaped by emerging technologies.

A historic new class is joining Chicago-Kent College of Law!

This fall, 279 students joined the J.D. program, including 40 evening students. The Class of 2029 enters with a median LSAT score of 162 and a median undergraduate GPA of 3.75, both the highest entering credentials in Chicago-Kent’s history.

And there’s even more to celebrate. Students come from 28 states and nine countries and earned undergraduate degrees from 126 different institutions. Their backgrounds span fields including architecture, computer science, engineering, theater, journalism, psychology and more.

We’re excited to welcome the Class of 2029 to the Chicago-Kent community and look forward to all they’ll accomplish.
