The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation is the hub for urban scholarship at UChicago.

We are thrilled to announce that Associate Prof. Philip Garboden, a housing expert from the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, will be the Kreisman Initiative for Housing Law and Policy's new Faculty Director.

Garboden's work focuses on improving policies that address the economic marginalization of low-income and non-white communities, and examining how supply side actors such as landlords, developers, and property managers respond to state, local, and federal housing policy.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Prof. Emily Talen, who led the Kreisman Initiative for four years and made immense contributions during her tenure. We're excited to continue and expand the vital work of the Kreisman Initiative under Philip’s leadership, and know that he'll bring a wealth of innovative ideas to the program's next chapter.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 Kreisman Initiative Housing Challenge - Corin Campbell, Henry Nieberg, and Julia Nieberg - for their innovative proposal centered on the Paseo Boricua in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood. This was the second year for the Housing Challenge, a competition that this year tasked UChicago students with proposing a new designated historic district in Chicago that simultaneously protects material and cultural heritage while safeguarding affordability. The winning team presented their ideas before a slate of expert judges from the world of housing at the 2026 Kreisman Initiative Housing Symposium and took home a $5000 prize. Congratulations, as well, to this year's finalists, who presented robust and deeply researched solutions for historic preservation issues in the city's Austin and Back of the Yards neighborhoods. In May, the Mansueto Institute hosted two colloquiums, "Choices or Constraints? Disentangling Preferences from Restrictions in Housing Markets" and "Homebodies: The Decline of Nightlife in Cities."

At "Choices or Constraints," Milena Almagro explained how policy contributes to segregation, using formulas she developed specifically to understand this phenomenon. "Homebodies" was the final colloquium of the academic year, led by the Mansueto Institute's own Prof. Christopher Berry and current Postdoctoral Fellow Victoria Mooers and Camilla Schneier. They compared time spent in bars, restaurants, theaters, and the home before and after the COVID-19 pandemic to track nightlife's resurgence--or decline.

The Institute team is excited to continue its impactful work supporting research in urban innovation over the summer.

On Monday, Jordan T. Kemp presented "Spatial Relativity: How Local Selection Shapes Urban Growth Across Scales."

This talk explored the loss of local correlations and heterogeneity in spatial aggregation. Kemp utilized Chicago-area data to display this phenomenon.

Kemp will discuss his research in multiscale growth, where he applies concepts from biophysics and population ecology to fully understand how urban environments are changing over time - and how populations adapt in response.
