Congratulations to alumni Lindsay Ardiff, PT, DPT (CO’ 2020) as well as several NUPTHMS faculty on being chosen to receive the CBMH Pilot/Exploratory Grant. The LEAD 4 project “Understanding the perspectives of patients with disabilities who are admitted to the hospital” was their proposal that was chosen to receive this grant. Roberto López-Rosado, PT, DPT, MA Cori Arquines, PT, MHPE, CLT and Mike Ellis, PT, DPT have also supported this project. Plans to dedicate quality time for data collection and data analysis phases are set to take place following this grant. Congratulations on this accomplishment!

Congratulations to Shamali Dusane, PT, MPT, PhD, on receiving her first National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant for the STABLE Trial! This study will explore innovative interventions to improve mobility, balance, and community participation for individuals living with stroke. Conducted in partnership with Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, the project highlights the power of collaboration in advancing rehabilitation research. An NIH R01 is a major career milestone, and this achievement reflects the innovation, impact, and excellence of Dr. Dusane and her team!!

Congratulations to Wenxin Zhou and Ashley Maloney! Each of these students won a prestigious award at the recent 2026 International Conference on Movement Science and Technology. Wen, a NUIN PhD student, won the Best Student Podium Presentation Award for her presentation titled: Effects of High-Intensity Gait Training in a Movement Amplification Environment on Dynamic Stability in People with Chronic Stroke. Ashley, a BME masters student, was the runner up for the Best Student Poster for her presentation titled: People with Chronic Stroke Adapt Differently to Predictable and Unpredictable Balance Disturbances During Gait. Congratulations to Jessica Trenkle, PT, DPT, and her team on receiving funding from United Cerebral Palsy for their project, “Closing the Gap Between Early Cerebral Palsy Risk Identification and Therapeutic Intervention: Linking Early Diagnosis to Timely Treatment.” In collaboration with Lurie Children’s Hospital, State of Illinois Early Intervention leadership, and community partners, this project will prospectively track the timeline from cerebral palsy risk assessment to Early Intervention referral and service initiation. The team will examine patterns of service utilization and identify individual-, system-, and community-level factors that influence timely access to therapy services. Congratulations, Jessica and team, on this important work to improve timely access to early intervention and therapy for children with cerebral palsy!

Congratulations to Dawn S. Brown, PT, DPT, EdD, on several recent accomplishments! On July 30th through August 1st, she co-facilitated the APTA and AoE Physical Therapy Faculty Development Workshop. This workshop was held at Northwestern and included opportunities for professional growth and development of education within the profession. She also had a paper, “My Call to Be Heard: A Letter from the Lonely Only”, published in the journal Dear Higher Education: Letters from the Social Justice Mountain. Congratulations to Eleni Papastratakos, PT, DPT, on her recent presentation of her residency research project at Movement & Rehabilitation Sciences Training Day!
Eleni graduated from the DPT program in 2025 and is one of our Northwestern & Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Neurologic Physical Therapy residents. She presented her research alongside her mentor, Kelly Pantanson, PT, DPT, of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Her poster, titled “Looking Beyond Peak Cough Flow: A Multidimensional Assessment of Cough in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury,” highlights an important area of research in neurorehabilitation.
