National Transfer Student Week, October 19–23, celebrates the students who navigate the transition to a new institution while bringing their experiences, responsibilities, and ambitions with them.

Quabeeny’s journey to Illinois Tech is one example of the many paths that students take to reach their educational goals. After beginning his studies at City Colleges of Chicago, he stepped away from college to work full-time and care for his family before returning to complete his degree.

As a nontraditional student, Quabeeny found that Illinois Tech’s community and tech-driven curriculum provided the flexibility and challenge that he was looking for. With support from his advisers and professors, he is pursuing both bachelor’s and master’s degrees while working full-time and serving on the Campus Judicial Board.

His story reflects what it means to meet students where they are and create opportunities for them to keep moving forward.

S. R. Crown Hall is more than an architectural landmark. It is a living center for architectural education. As part of Open House Chicago 2026, presented by the Chicago Architecture Center, visitors will have the opportunity to step inside one of Chicago’s most iconic buildings.

Designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1956 specifically for architectural education and studio life, Crown Hall remains the home of Illinois Tech’s School of Architecture. Its 26,000-square-foot uninterrupted studio floor and 18-foot ceilings continue to give students the space to learn, design, and create within one of Mies’s most celebrated works.

The modern workforce is evolving rapidly, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, automation, emerging technologies, and increasingly interdisciplinary career paths. Higher education must evolve alongside it.

At Illinois Tech, we’re taking a proactive approach to that transformation by rethinking how academic disciplines come together and how students prepare for the workforce. Our new academic structure brings together three interdisciplinary colleges: Tech Futures, Design Futures, and Professional Futures.

This model is designed to strengthen connections between disciplines, expand experiential learning, and align education more closely with the skills and capabilities employers need.
