Mostly pharm will be related to a disease process. Instead of memorizing meds, focus on what your role is before during and after administration to help keep the client stable.

Example

Heart failure 👉🏾 check HR & BP why because you may have to hold the med.

Acute Pancreatitis 👉🏾 Check vitals and expect to give an opioid… why because client is in pain but also at risk for respiratory depression and have narcan available

Pregnant client in the clinic complaining of heart burn 👉🏾 reinforce teaching about OTC antacids which are safe in pregnancy

Client on a heparin infusion and develops bruising 👉🏾 Stop the infusion why because the client is at risk for bleeding then expect to escalate care to the RN

Practice understanding what you should do in situations.
Use your Ati pharm book and complete those templates in the back.

Pharmacology Strategy…

Please start looking up these 2 terms:

1. Pharmacodynamics

“What the MEDICATION does to the body”

This answers:

What does the medication target, what does it do to that target, and what body response follows?

Albuterol → activates β₂ receptors → relaxes bronchial smooth muscle → opens the airway → improves breathing but may cause tremors and tachycardia.

2. Pharmacokinetics

“What the BODY does to the medication”

This explains how much medication reaches the target and how long it remains active.

Example:
25 mg Diphenhydramine →Absorbs in the digestive track → Distributed into the bloodstream which crosses the blood brain barrier→Metabolize by the liver →Excreted by the kidneys → drug concentration rises during absorption,reaches a peak, then falls as it’s metabolites are excreted out the body through urine.

ADME

👉🏾Pharmacokinetics determines how much medication reaches the target.

👉🏾Pharmacodynamics determines what happens when it gets there.

✔️Then you FOCUS on what you as the nurse does before during and after administration.

Med Math is not only about solving problems. It’s also about providing safety.

Get real good at understanding the nursing process if you want to critically think through case studies.

Answer the questions using the case study components. ⤵️

Assessment - How is the patient showing up? Hint: Use your health assessment techniques.

Problem - What’s their chief complaint? Why are they here?

Planning- As the nurse what can you do about it, be specific with a timeframe? Think plan of care.

Intervention - Why are you intervening this way? Cite a real
source!

Evaluation- Whatever intervention you did, did it work? How do you know?

This is how you approach an unfolding case study.
