The Section of Neurovascular Surgery celebrated its 16th Annual Research Retreat with 60 researchers, collaborators, and guests. 🧠🔬

Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Betty Bell, philanthropists and program friends, co-moderated the retreat around the theme of “Thriving in Times of Change,”bringing perspectives from the business world.

Mohamad Bydon, MD and Dr. Issam Awad shared leadership perspectives and recognized individual scientists’ contributions. The retreat also celebrated team successes and exciting advances in imaging AI, aneurysm biology, neurovascular radiation injury, clinical trial innovations, gene therapy, somatic mutations, and quantum sensing.

A wonderful celebration of collaboration, innovation, and the future of neurovascular research! 🧠✨

Mohamad Bydon, MD, Chair of Neurological Surgery at UChicago Medicine, is spotlighted in a Becker's Spine Review article exploring the evolving role of AI in spine care.

Speaking at the 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference, Dr. Bydon made a compelling case that as AI grows more sophisticated, the ability to critically evaluate its outputs becomes more important — not less.

From data cleaning challenges to AI-generated research papers that fabricate references, he reminds us that technology is only as reliable as the judgment behind it.

This week the brightest minds in neurosurgery came together at Hyde Park Labs at the University of Chicago for a research retreat united by one mission: to solve brain and spine disease — including conditions that our field has considered incurable.

We mapped the frontier, challenged assumptions, and committed to doing the hard science that is fundamentally rewriting what’s possible for patients with the most complex diseases of the nervous system.
