Congratulations to Professor Alison Siegler, director of the Federal Criminal Justice Clinic, on receiving the American Constitution Society Chicago Lawyer Chapter’s 2026 Abner J. Mikva Award.

The award recognizes Chicago-area lawyers and judges who have made extraordinary contributions to progressive legal causes. Professor Geoffrey Stone, ’71, nominated Siegler, highlighting her 26-year career representing low-income and marginalized clients in federal court, her work addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and her commitment to inspiring future lawyers to pursue public service.

The honor has a special UChicago Law connection: it is named for the late Abner J. Mikva, ’51, a Law School alumnus and former faculty member whose remarkable career included service as a U.S. congressman, federal appellate judge, and White House counsel.

Maddi Wong, ’28, is spending her summer experience at Apple in the tech hub city, of Cupertino in her home state of California. As a content services legal intern, she’s exploring transactional law in an industry—entertainment—that has long interested her.

"At Apple, I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn about countless different industries through the services that my team works on: Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Sports, Fitness+, etc," she shared. "Understanding the nuances of copyright and transactional law between different industries has been fascinating, but most importantly, it has helped me narrow down the industries and practice areas that I’m most passionate about pursuing in my legal career."

In today’s The New York Times, Chief Legal Affairs Correspondent Adam Liptak highlights recent scholarship by Professor Sam Bray, ’05, on the constitutionality of requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms, as well as a new study by Professor Eric Posner and Lee Epstein examining more than two decades of oral arguments before the US Supreme Court.

The two works offer insights into both the cases before the Court and the lawyers who argue them.

Willie Crawford III, ’27, spent his summer in New York City as a summer associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, working on an M&A transaction and liability management exercises while learning from attorneys across the firm.

For Willie, a first-generation student, relationships with UChicago Law alumni and others he met through networking played an important role in finding the opportunity. And the experience has reinforced what drew him to law school in the first place: the chance to build a broad toolkit for solving complex problems.

Professor and Former Dean Saul Levmore remembers his longtime colleague Randy Picker in a new essay for ProMarket, reflecting on Picker’s distinctive contributions to competition law, copyright, technology, and legal education.

Levmore writes about Picker’s gift for bringing law and economics to the history and evolution of industries, his deep curiosity about the relationship between law and technological change, and the enthusiasm and humor he brought to the classroom.

“Most of us do not have the patience or knowledge for this kind of work, and we will all be worse off without Randy’s enthusiasm for the details and for his uncertainty about what to admire and what to criticize.”

We are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Professor Randal C. “Randy” Picker, ’85, a beloved teacher, influential scholar, and deeply committed citizen of the University of Chicago.

Over more than 35 years on the Law School faculty, Professor Picker shaped generations of students and left an enduring mark on the intellectual and institutional life of the Law School and the wider University.

“Randy personified the best of our values,” Dean Adam Chilton said. “He was always willing to give his time generously to his students and colleagues, and he was uniquely committed to protecting what makes this University special.”

We remember Professor Picker's extraordinary legacy as a scholar, teacher, colleague, mentor, and friend.
