The YC Harvest Festival is coming October 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Yavapai College Chino Valley Center!

There will be plenty of fun for the whole family. Our Horticulture students have been busy growing a corn maze and pumpkin patch, along with a great selection of plants that will be available for purchase.

Come explore the maze, pick out a pumpkin, check out what our students have grown, and enjoy a day at the college.

We’ll see you at:

Did you know poinsettias are native to southern Mexico?

So while they may have Southwest roots, they certainly weren’t built for our high desert winters. Our greenhouse gives these tropical plants a little taste of home by providing the warmth and protection they need to thrive.

Here at Yavapai College, students are learning to grow them from start to finish, using careful irrigation, nutrition, and beneficial organisms to keep the plants healthy.

From the warm hills of Mexico to a heated greenhouse in the high desert of Arizona, it’s a pretty big change of scenery for a poinsettia!

These gentlemen planted a scraggly aspen to replace a mostly dead aspen that had replaced an aspen that had already died.

Now THAT is evidence of just how tough an aspen can be in our unforgiving growing conditions. 😓😅😥😰

For the lower-mid-elevation grower looking for a plant that thrives on neglect, this might sound promising...

Drum roll: 🥁🥁🥁🥁We are not recommending aspen.

Sometimes in our research tree lines, survival is less about thriving and more about refusing to give up.

🍇 Juicy and Sweet Bounty from Rich’s Vineyard! 🍇

Our long-time assistant, Rich Peterson, has an incredible table grape vineyard, and his grapes are something special!

This year, Pangaea Bakery in Prescott is selling Rich’s fresh, organic, locally grown grapes. They are incredibly good and unlike anything else you can find around here.

And to make them even more special, Rich won a blue ribbon for his grapes at this year’s Yavapai County Fair!

If you see them at Pangaea, grab some while you can. These are definitely worth trying! Tell them we sent you!

Some of our mums this year are going BIG! 🌼 A portion of this year’s crop will be growing in big 3-gallon pots, while the rest will be in our traditional 6-inch pots.

This photo shows a student planting them back in mid-August. And whatever you do, don’t tell anyone what we’re growing...

Mum’s the word. 😉

Want to really impress your mum? Sign up for a Spring class at Yavapai College! Start thinking about it now and come see what we’re growing. Come talk to me and I’ll give you a tour of our horticulture facilities.

You might leave with some great ideas for your own garden, skills you can take with you to continue your education, or even the knowledge and experience to start your own business or run an amazing agricultural operation.

There are many ways to grow at YC. 🌱
