Came across this photo of MC baseball team in Florida in 1989. Brings back wonderful memories of former Berwyn resident Buzz Capra, who was coaching in Phillies’ minor-league system. Buzz died May 11th at the age of 78. In this photo, Buzz is with Panther assistant coach Bob Considine, MC gym namesake Henry Vais and head coach Wally Reynolds.
Buzz, who lived on Riverside Drive in Berwyn, played in the majors with the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves from 1971 to '77. He was the National League ERA champ in 1974 and got the save in the game when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to pass Babe Ruth on April 8th, 1974.
In addition to playing with Aaron, Buzz also was teammates with Willie Mays and 300-game winners Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan and Phil Niekro.
Buzz loved the game of baseball and treated being in the major leagues as a privilege. Great storyteller and an even greater person.
