Congratulations to PhD student Ellie Renkert on presenting her research poster, “Do Voice Symptoms Track Disease Severity in Rheumatoid Arthritis?” at the Mayo Clinic Rheumatology Centennial Celebration and Autoimmunity Symposium. Ellie also serves as a temporary research professional at Mayo Clinic!

Ellie represented UC’s Voice and Speech Rehabilitation Research Laboratory, led by Dr. Keiko Ishikawa, sharing collaborative research focused on developing voice biomarkers for rheumatoid arthritis. This project is funded through the Mark E. and Mary A. Davis Initiative in Rheumatoid Arthritis Research, with Dr. Diana Orbelo serving as principal investigator.

We’re proud to see Ellie represent UC and contribute to research advancing our understanding of voice symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis!♥️🖤

❤️🖤 October is AAC Awareness Month!

Our UC CSD students kicked off the month by welcoming representatives from two AAC companies to class for hands-on learning with communication devices and tools that support individuals with communication differences.

Our students and the UC AACess Lab also participated in ALS United’s WalkALS Cincinnati, supporting individuals and families affected by ALS.

From the classroom to the community, we’re proud of our students’ commitment to learning, advocacy, and communication access for all!

Did you know October is ADHD awareness month?

SLPs and Audiologists are proud team members for clients who have ADHD, when appropriate. They can help to provide strategies for executive function, social cognition, and language processing, as well as support a differential diagnosis, and recommending assistive technology or training.

October is National Protect Your Hearing Month! 👂

Our hearing is something we use every day, but loud sounds and prolonged noise exposure can take a toll over time.

This month is a great reminder to:

⚫️ Keep headphone and earbud volume at a safe level
🔴 Give your ears a break from loud sounds
⚫️ Wear hearing protection in noisy environments
🔴 Talk with a hearing professional if you notice changes in your hearing

Protecting your hearing today can help support healthy hearing for years to come!
