❤️ For Harman Sivia, becoming a family nurse practitioner is about helping patients stay healthy, not just treating them when they’re sick.

The UC College of Nursing MSN student is building on her nursing experience to pursue a career focused on preventive care and stronger patient relationships. Now, a $10,000 CVS Health Caring Hearts FNP Student Scholarship is helping support her next steps.

As a senior in UC's BSN program, Bridget Verkamp landed a co-op on the hematology-oncology unit at Cincinnati Children's — the only unit she ever wanted.

That hands-on experience turned into a job offer after she graduated in 2024. Now, it is her turn to precept a UC Nursing co-op student and pass on the lessons her preceptor taught her: know when to support, know when to challenge, and give students room to find their own pace.

She's also back at UC pursuing her MSN in Nursing Education. "The path underneath me keeps being built as I walk." 💛

From UC Nursing BSN graduate to national Jonas Scholar 🎓

Nicole Holtz (BSN '20), now a student in our Psychiatric-Mental Health DNP program, is one of just 80 doctoral nursing students nationwide in the 2026–2028 Jonas Scholar cohort. The program is run by Jonas Philanthropies with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Nicole cares for teens in crisis on Cincinnati Children's inpatient psychiatric unit, where she aims to "be light in some of these children's and families' darkest moments." Her next goal is to join nursing faculty and teach future nurses the skills that are hard to learn from a textbook: therapeutic communication, emotional regulation, and processing vicarious trauma.

She credits UC mentors with believing in her early on. Now she plans to do the same for the next generation.

A few weeks ago, Assistant Professors Yuqing Zhang, PhD, RN, and Sayonara Barbosa, PhD, RN, participated in the inaugural Midwest LEADRS Intensive, an NIH-funded R25 fellowship that prepares nurse scientists and other health professionals to identify, measure and develop interventions addressing the non-biological factors that influence health outcomes and advance health equity.

The intensive brought together 20 fellows from universities and disciplines across the Midwest for hands-on training in community-engaged research methods and the opportunity to learn directly from community partners. 🤝

We’re proud to see our faculty contributing to research that strengthens community partnerships, advances health equity and works toward meaningful improvements in health outcomes. 💙
