MSJ Art and Design The Department of Art & Design provides degrees in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Art Education and Art The Departments of Art and Design. Art majors at Mount St.

Joseph University discover a wealth of opportunities to explore and develop their artistic abilities. Students who successfully complete the art, art education or fine arts majors:

Engage in the creative art making process, using imagery, structures and media, to express and communicate ideas, feelings and experiences. Identify the formal, technical and expressive aspects in visual artworks. Understand and appreciate the historical, social and cultural contexts of the art and artists in past and present societies. Students work in our facilities, including the newly renovated Dorothy Meyer Ziv Art and Design Building, and the Studio San Giuseppe Art Gallery. We offer art scholarships to freshmen based on the artistic potential demonstrated in their portfolios. We offer majors in art, art education, art history and fine arts. We offer minors in art, art history, and photography. Graphic design majors combine form and content to communicate ideas to a variety of audiences. Graphic Design majors at the College of Mount St. Joseph can explore new techniques and develop the ability to communicate ideas into images in a highly artistic environment. This career-oriented program familiarizes students with the field of graphic design and its application to visual communication. The program also offers opportunities to study new technologies in the field. Words and images are organized using a unique blend of traditional methods and new technologies. Students can explore cooperative education options in their concentrations. All Graphic Design majors are eligible to study abroad through our partnership with Richmond University in London, England.

Dr. Michaelann Kelley, Chair of the Department of Creative Arts at Mount St. Joseph University, recently visited Mount Notre Dame High School to share the exciting opportunities available at the Mount and engage students in a fun, hands-on art experience.
 
Students put their creativity to work designing their own pet rocks and artistic homes, drawing inspiration from the unique styles of artists, including local Cincinnati favorites Cedric Michael Cox and Jim Tucker. From colorful designs to imaginative structures, students explored how artists can inspire us to think outside the box or in this case ‘on’ the box and transform materials into works of art.
 
The visit was a wonderful opportunity to connect with future artists, share the creative possibilities at MSJ, and demonstrate that art is about exploration, imagination, and having fun.

MSJ Art & Design students and faculty traveled to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, for an unforgettable day of photography, history, and Thoroughbred racing! From behind-the-scenes tours and morning workouts to the Winner’s Circle, participants captured the people, traditions, and artistry that make Keeneland special.
The experience also introduced students to Raíces: The Making of Latino Legacies in Racing, an exhibition celebrating Latino contributions to the racing industry. Their original photographs will be displayed alongsideRaíces at Mount St. Joseph University in Fall 2027!

Professor Swati Chopra is among the MSJ faculty artists selected for AfterImage: Portraiture as Memory, part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial at Studio San Giuseppe. The exhibition brings together photographers and lens-based artists whose work explores memory, identity, relationships, and time. Opportunities like this allow MSJ faculty to stay actively engaged in the professional art world while bringing those experiences and perspectives back to students.

33rd Annual Juried Art Exhibition
Congratulations to MSJ adjunct faculty member JJ Baker, who was selected for the 33rd Annual Juried Art Exhibition at Jasper Arts’ Thyen-Clark Cultural Center in Jasper, Indiana. JJ was one of 34 artists selected for the exhibition, which features work across photography, printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, and graphite. It is exciting to see our faculty continuing to create, exhibit, and stay actively connected to the professional art community.

Dr. Michaelann Kelley, Chair of Creative Arts department and Associate Professor of Art & Design, is participating in AfterImage: Portraiture as Memory at Studio San Giuseppe as part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial. Her work is also included in The Long Lives We Carry at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. Her participation reflects the strong connection between artistic practice, memory, community, and the professional experiences our faculty bring back into the classroom.

The Death of You and Me
Assistant Professor Emily Wiethorn is presenting The Death of You and Me at Sinclair Community College Art Galleries as part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial. Her exhibition explores memory, trauma, healing, and the ways photography can hold experiences that do not fit into a simple narrative. Emily also co-curated AfterImage: Portraiture as Memory at Studio San Giuseppe, extending her work from artist to curator and bringing contemporary photographic practice directly into the Mount community.
