The School of Art is saddened by the passing of Faculty Emeritus Frank Herrmann. We share the post below in remembrance of his extraordinary contributions as an artist, educator, mentor, and member of our community.

Some projects take my breath away.

This is one of them.

Frank Herrmann was not only one of Cincinnati's most influential artists and educators, he was also a dear friend. It was a tremendous honor to work alongside Frank on this mural, which became one of the last significant painting projects of his lifetime.

What began as a vision for a landmark public artwork surrounding his longtime Northside studio grew into something even greater: a partnership with the University of Cincinnati's DAAP program to establish the Frank Herrmann Scholarship and support future generations of artists. To create this masterpiece, Mark Hanavan, one of Frank's former students, mentored a team of 20 local emerging artists employed by 1001 Colors.

Frank's influence can be seen across Cincinnati and around the globe through the artists he mentored, the students he inspired, and the creative community he helped shape for more than half a century.

I hope you'll join us as we celebrate Frank's remarkable life, legacy, and enduring impact on our city at the upcoming mural dedication.

The Tabula Rasa Gallery was full of texture last week during “Experiments in Print + Textiles." Adjunct Instructor Katrina Shafor’s Special 2D Studio students explored printmaking in unexpected ways, incorporating printed fabrics, quilting, collage, stretched surfaces, and more into their work.

Current Bachelor of Fine Arts student Charlemae Sexton has been selected as one of the 2026 SOS ART Artist in Residence at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, Ohio.

As part of the residency, Charlemae is presenting A Life, Despite All, an exhibition that combines portraiture with abstract representations of issues facing the transgender community. Through large-scale portraits of trans individuals from the Cincinnati community, the work examines the relationship between personal identity and the often intangible social and political forces that shape lived experience. The exhibition explores a visible “dual state,” highlighting the contrast between selfhood and the abstract ideas that can constrain or deny one’s reality.

The SOS ART Artist in Residence Program, offered in collaboration with the Fitton Center, supports artists whose work engages themes of peace and justice. Selected residents receive support to develop creative projects over a three-month period, culminating in opportunities to share their work with the broader community

Summer studio vibes. This summer Bachelor of Fine Arts students are deep in the process of painting, sculpting, drawing, and experimenting in Assistant Professor Mrin Aggarwal's Interdisciplinary Studio and Senior Seminar as well as adjunct instructor Jeshua Schuster's Advanced 2D Studio classes. From testing new materials to finding their visual voice, they're creating unique work that pushes past the picture plane and helps them to define what makes their practice uniquely theirs.

Stop by the current show " Validation Fabrication" in the Tabula Rasa Gallery this week to see some of the work from students in Mrin Aggarwal's class. Artist reception Thursday, July 9, 4 - 6pm, College of DAAP, Wolfson 5300, 5th floor.

This exhibition highlights a selection of standout works from three Foundations courses: Body and Representation, Surface as Object, and The Thing. Students explore themes across 2D, 3D, and media to develop strong conceptual ideas and personal direction. Featuring works by 16 emerging artists across our Foundations program. Stop by the 4th floor display case (Aronoff wing) and see them in person before August 15th!

05/30/2026

Stop by the DAAP Library Front Desk display case, before July 24, to see a selection of student paintings by first-year 2D and introductory painting students in Associate Professor Emil Robinson. These works began as photography-based paintings created on hand-built wooden panels using acrylic and oil paint. Students explored atmosphere, subtle color, light, and visual ambiguity while thinking beyond simply copying a photograph. The result is a group of paintings that reward looking at them closely and invite interpretations. Featuring work by: Kai Cavins, Mia Getter, Ashlyn McIntyre, Maysun Ring, Sarah Boellner, and Jacob Eichenlaub.
