Please join us this Friday (10.16) at 4:30 p.m. in Blegen 308 for a lecture by Prof. Mark Munn (The Pennsylvania State University) entitled:

Herodotus spins a tale: the story of Atys and its origin in Anatolian funerary traditions

Abstract: Herodotus’ story of the death of Atys, son of Croesus (1.34-45) has long been seen as an example of Herodotus’ willingness to embroider if not invent stories for their dramatic effect in his narrative. Images on a distinctive class of funerary monuments from Anatolia demonstrate that the elements of the story of Atys derive from a tradition of commemorating noble rulers. Herodotus’ account is thus recognizable not as free invention, but as a reworking of a traditional memory of Atys, whose life was celebrated and death was mourned according to what may be termed an Anatolian heroic archetype.

Yesterday evening, we had the pleasure to welcome to our department this term's Tytus fellows!

Miriam Mann (Oxford) presented her research of the Linear B Archive of Pylos, Najee Olya (William & Mary) discussed the work on his future book on Africa and Africans in Greek art, and James Sickinger (Florida State) on publishing ostraka from the Agora and on the broader context of ostracism.

The Tytus fellowship allows researchers to benefit from the resources of the Burnam Classics Library and enriches the academic life of the department.

Congratulations to our alumna, Dr. Sarah Wenner, on her promotion to Associate Curator of Ancient Art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Sarah defended her dissertation, "(Re) Making a Roman City: Refuse, Recycling, and Renovation Across Empire", in 2023. Expert in the ceramic traditions of Southern Jordan, she holds the curatorial position alongside her Assistant Professorship at ACOR in Jordan.
