Fall semester is back in full swing, and so are University of Cincinnati student orgs. 🤖⚙️

Another group that brings together Bearcats from all majors to design, build, and battle robots weighing 1, 3 or 12 pounds is the UC Combat Robotics Club.

They specifically use the UC Ground Floor Makerspace to build fully functional, competition-ready robots—learning everything from machining and fabrication to electronics, teamwork and problem-solving along the way.

Nearly every UC combat robot has roots in the Makerspace, including Maximizer and Robo-Cat, formidable battlebots built to win.

What makes the club even more valuable? Students aren't just building for a competition. They’re taking ideas from the classroom, like their capstone projects and turning them into real, working builds.

Cincinnati and Tanzania are coming together for a night with a purpose. 🌍

Village Life Outreach Project, an international nonprofit based at the 1819 Innovation Hub, is bringing its annual Night on the Serengeti fundraiser to Cincinnati on September 12.

For more than 20 years, Village Life has connected Cincinnati students, healthcare professionals and community leaders with rural communities in Tanzania through opportunities that create impact on both sides of the partnership.

The evening will feature Tanzanian-inspired food, live entertainment, cultural experiences and stories from Village Life’s work. Proceeds will support ongoing efforts in Tanzania, including the M. Anne Haire Reproductive and Child Health Center, while creating opportunities for UC students and Cincinnati community members to engage in global service.

What if we’re thinking about AI too narrowly? 🤔

When we talk about the future of AI, the conversation often centers around the tools and agents we already know. But according to Ohad Elhelo, Co-Founder & CEO of AUI (Augmented Intelligence), we may be missing the bigger picture:

“If we're thinking 10 or 20 years into the future, it's very much likely that there will be many different types of AI. Not just different agents, but different architectures, and then we'll have different types of AIs that we don't even know about.”

The AI landscape we know today may only be the beginning. New architectures, models and entirely different forms of intelligence could change how we think about what AI can do.

The takeaway? Don’t limit your imagination to the tools in front of you today. The future of AI may look very different than we expect.

This summer, 10 DAAP (official) industrial design students worked alongside our corporate partner, Sensory Robotics, to rethink how sensors could be mounted on robotic arms to improve safety and simplify setup. 💡

Working through UC’s Experiential Exploration Program (EEP), the team explored sensor placement, modeled configurations in CAD, built prototypes and worked directly with Sensory to refine their ideas, resulting in a six-sensor concept for the company’s next-generation SR-2 system.

The coolest part? This learning experience goes both ways. Students got experience working with real constraints, deadlines and client feedback. Sensory Robotics got a fresh perspective from a team approaching the problem from a design-first lens. 🔎

As Sensory Robotics COO Mark Gagas put it, "the students brought ideas and approaches the company may not have explored otherwise."

Two students, Owen Eklund and Elliot Toland, were also recognized with CCPS Innovation and Leadership Awards for their work during the challenge. 🌟

That’s what experiential learning can look like at 1819—working with real companies, solving real problems, and getting years’ worth of work, as students.

Fall classes are in session, and that means University of Cincinnati student clubs are back in action! 🐾

One group putting the 1819 Makerspace to work is AeroCats, UC’s student aerospace engineering organization.

AeroCats allows students to get hands-on with aerospace design and engineering by developing concepts and putting them to the test.

Through their investment in the 1819 Makerspace, the team has access to the tools and equipment to turn their ideas into models they can actually fly! ✈️

The Ground Floor Makerspace is open for the semester, and it’s free and available to every UC student.

Whether you're building a prototype, making something for a class or just want to learn how a piece of equipment works, there’s so much to build at the Makerspace.

There's still time to help bring UC to the SXSW stage! ↙️

We're always learning from our students, and now they're in the driver's seat. Led by NEXT Innovation Scholars Director Aaron Bradley and research fellow Maxwell Kemats, the proposed SXSW 2027 session asks one big question: What Does Gen Z See Coming Next?

This research explores the signals, technologies and cultural shifts shaping their world and asks what they could mean for the future. The result is a different perspective, one informed by the generation living and building it.
