On Monday, we celebrated A&S Day dedicated to our incredible faculty and staff! From breakfast to an afternoon of adventure at the Cincinnati Zoo, it was a day filled with appreciation, community and fun.

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, so do the ethical questions surrounding it.

Researchers in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences are examining questions of trust, harm and fairness — and what it means to rely on AI in areas like education, business and everyday life.

Through UC’s Center for Humanities and Technology and other interdisciplinary work, A&S researchers are taking a critical look at the implications of AI and emerging technologies.

“We're focusing on questions about trust in AI, harm in AI,” postdoctoral fellow Clair Baleshta told Spectrum News.

Could a whale really swallow a person whole? 🐋

Technically, a s***m whale is large enough — but there’s no documented case of one actually eating a person.

So, what animal has swallowed an adult human whole? 🐍

UC biology professor Bruce Jayne told Science News that the reticulated python is the only animal documented to have done so. Jayne studies snake gape — how wide a snake can open its mouth — to better understand the maximum size of prey different species can swallow.

But don’t panic: cases involving humans are extremely rare.

“Just because an animal has the physiological capacity to do something doesn’t necessarily mean that they will,” Jayne said.

Genius Lives Here. 💡

On Oct. 15, the UC College of Arts & Sciences will bring together four recipients of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for Genius Lives Here: Rehumanizing Labor — Putting People Back at the Center of Work.

Spanning history, technology, labor, race, gender, democracy and human rights, these scholars will come together to explore a timely question: What does it mean to put people back at the center of work?

Join us for an interdisciplinary conversation examining how inequality, technology and social change are reshaping work and public life.
