CMS Baseball spent a recent Saturday morning at College Park, Claremont Little League's home field, working with young players from the community. By playing catch and learning the essentials of fielding and hitting, the team gave local kids a chance to partner with collegiate athletes they look up to. Beyond sharing time and talent, CMS Baseball also donated equipment following the Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus opening this semester.

For Scott Smith '03, a former Stags baseball player and current president of Claremont Little League, the day was a full circle moment. Scott played for Coach Randy Town, whose teams held similar clinics, and he now gets to enjoy watching a new generation of Stags work with local kids. Head CMS Baseball Coach Bill Walkenbach and his “amazing student-athletes” have carried the tradition forward, Smith said, leading the clinic the last three years in a row.

“Having college student-athletes from right here in Claremont spend a Saturday morning teaching and encouraging our young players makes a real impression,” said Smith. “It makes me proud to be a Stag and proud to see the program giving back to the community in such a tangible way.”

Voter season is underway in California!

And with 14 statewide propositions to consider this election cycle, that’s a lot of research to complete before making knowledgeable decisions by Nov. 3, when polls close.

To assist voters with this arduous task, the Rose Institute of State and Local Government offers the Video Voter Guide, a cogent, nonpartisan analysis of each proposition. Eleven Rose Institute students took part in the project this year, researching and producing the videos, which address topics such as taxes, housing, and voter IDs.

Since 2012, the Rose Institute has produced the series each election cycle, evolving with the times and technology. According to Professor Ken Miller, Director of the Rose Institute, the intention remains the same across iterations: to offer voters “easy-to-understand, reliable information on the statewide propositions” that helps them “navigate a weighty ballot pamphlet or the messaging in partisan campaign ads.”

Meet the 2026-27 Woolley Athenaeum Fellows! 🎙️

Ambika Gupta '27, Jasper Langley-Hawthorne '27, and Shivom Parihar '28 are the students behind the mic at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum this year. They introduce speakers, spark head-table conversations, and lead the post-talk Q&As that make the Ath the heart of intellectual engagement at CMC.

Over the decades, guest speakers have included thought leaders and innovators; Pulitzer Prize winners and Nobel Laureates; diplomats and prominent physicians.

While their backgrounds and motivations to become Fellows vary, Gupta, Langley-Hawthorne, and Parihar share a commonality—their deep affinity for the Ath.

Last month, Alexander Bartholomew '28, an Integrated Sciences and Mathematics major, traveled to Switzerland to present a poster at the European Conference on Computational Biology (ECCB). His research examines how differences in gut microbiomes between individuals affect machine learning approaches to identifying colorectal cancer.

Alex will spend the coming year abroad at Oxford studying math and physics, with plans to pursue a PhD in biophysics or a related field after graduation. Seeing cutting-edge work in computational biology firsthand has deepened his motivation for his coursework, including Theories of Deep Learning and Mathematical Mechanical Biology.

He thanks Professor Shibu Yooseph, Kravis Professor of Integrated Sciences: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, and the Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences for making the trip possible. "I got to learn so much and see how much left there is to learn."

A longtime trusted think tank for government leaders and the public, CMC’s Lowe Institute of Political Economy is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

That’s four decades of vital work at the intersection of economics, political science, and public policy that helps others better understand the complex world we live in.

At the heart of the Institute’s work, said Professor Cameron Shelton, is the student research experience.

“What students experience at the Lowe Institute is a fantastic bridge to life after CMC,” said Shelton, who has directed the Institute for a decade.

In celebration of its major milestone, the Lowe Institute held a 40th Anniversary Symposium in CMC’s Athenaeum and Robert Day Sciences Center. Alumni, students, faculty, staff, and board members gathered to reflect on the past, honor the present, and imagine the possibilities ahead.

“The projects and technologies have changed enormously over 40 years, but the essential experience hasn’t: students working closely with faculty, taking responsibility for difficult questions, and learning how to guide inquiry when there isn’t an answer in the back of the book,” Shelton said. “That’s the tradition we want to carry into the next 40 years.”

Shelby Van Pelt '02, best-selling author of "Remarkably Bright Creatures," recently spent time with student fellows at the Gould Center of Humanistic Studies for an intimate session on imagination, curiosity, and what it takes to turn an unusual idea into a story people love. 🐙

Before the novel, the Emmy-winning Netflix film, and five million copies sold, Van Pelt was a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics major at CMC. The skills that made her book possible are the ones CMC students are building right now: taking feedback, collaborating with peers, and delivering on a deadline. Her message to Gould Fellows was clear: these habits will serve you in any career.

Van Pelt’s afternoon conversation preceded a full house Athenaeum dinner and talk, a program of the Gould Center's Celebration of Coeducation Speaker Series. Thank you for continuing to inspire CMCers with your bright creation!
