The Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus, a new set of state-of-the-art facilities and playing fields for CMS Athletics, is officially open to the CMC community!

Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, who also worked on the award-winning Robert Day Sciences Center, the Sports Bowl further reflects the excellence and ambition demonstrated by CMS scholar-leader-athletes both in competition and inside the classroom.

Among the Phase One highlights: The Arcade, a brand-new covered walking passage that leads directly into the main bowl; Patrick G. Rogan Stadium, home to football, track and field, and lacrosse; Abbott Brown Family Central Plaza; a golf training center, and a variety of walkable pathways and environmentally supportive landscapes. By the end of September, a 400-space parking structure, Rogan Stadium field houses, and Arce baseball and Athenas softball fields will be completed.

Part of the Roberts Campus master plan, the addition of the Robert Day Sciences Center, along with the reorientation of various athletic fields in the Sports Bowl, will open up spaces for future improvements to the CMC campus.

“The Roberts Campus enhances our ability to fulfill our educational mission,” CMC President Will Dudley said. “The creation of the Sports Bowl to the east of Claremont Boulevard not only provides extraordinary opportunities for athletic competition, training, health, and wellness, but also unlocks potential across the entire CMC campus for academic and social facilities and activities.”

The CMC campus is abuzz with energy and excitement now that the Class of 2030 is here!

With help from a fleet of eager student leaders and athletes, members of CMC’s newest class have officially moved into their home away from home. What did they bring from locations near and far? Well, beloved stuffies, favorite pillows, and mac and cheese (of course!).

Now they’re ready to explore, get involved, and deepen friendships made in these exciting, early days. Up next: the first day of classes on Aug. 31.

One of the hallmarks of a CMC arrival for incoming students: Welcome Orientation Adventure (WOA) trips, which take new CMCers to Southern California beaches and mountains for camping and recreating in the great outdoors, among other bonding activities.

The week one excursions are designed to promote a sense of community and belonging, build self-confidence, and offer a pause before the rigors of the school year begin.

“We hope students can take a deep breath, soak it all in, and embrace the moment without worrying too much about all the unknowns that come with the college journey ahead,” said MaryKate Linden, Senior Assistant Dean for Student Life.

As members of the Class of 2030 made their way to awaiting buses, Julia Savage ’30 noted that she, “like everyone here,” is excited for the chance to make new friends and deepen connections.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about where other people are from and how that’s shaped them as a person, and how they think differently than me,” she said.

Asked what he was expecting out of WOA, Neyvl Panicker ’30, while hanging out with some of his newfound friends, said “a really fun time.”

“We’re tired, but we got some sleep, and we’re ready to go,” he added, prompting Hamza Banatwala ’30 to chime in: “Spirits are high!”

On the agenda for new students and families arriving at CMC this weekend? Settling in, making friends, and celebrating the moment together with lots of smiles.

For President Will Dudley and his wife, Dr. Carola Tanna, Sunday’s move-in and orientation activities were a wonderful way to meet students and extend our warm, supportive campus culture at the start of their first academic year at CMC.

“I knew everyone at CMC was going to be friendly, but it really does feel like the friendliest campus there is!” emphasized Pearl Steele ’30, from Seattle.

This summer, Will Dudley joined CMC as its sixth president, bringing years of experience in higher ed leadership and a deep commitment to liberal arts education. In this stroll across campus, he answers questions from student leaders, reveals a few fun facts about himself, and shares what he's looking forward to with fall move-in (and an exciting academic year!) right around the corner.

A chance conversation with a stranger at a park in Chile led Caren Ensing ’27 to a summer internship with the World Wildlife Fund’s Blue Finance team—proof of what can happen when curiosity meets opportunity.

A dual Political Science/Government major at CMC with an environmental analysis focus on the economics track at Pomona College, Ensing built her path deliberately: a semester studying microplastic pollution in Ushuaia, Argentina, research at CMC’s Roberts Environmental Center on venture capital investment in climate companies, and ultimately a role at WWF ranking how banks invest in ocean-related sectors.

"I was working at the intersection of all of these things," she said. "Blue Finance was the best of all of those worlds."

For the last 18 summers, rising high school seniors participating in the Pasadena-based Partnership for Success (PFS) program have visited CMC, spending the night in the dorms, eating at Collins Dining Hall, interacting with staff and faculty, and fueling their dreams of becoming college students.

The overnight experience, made possible by Trustee and former Board Chair David Mgrublian ‘82 P’11, is a favorite among PFS scholars.

“Almost to a person, they talk about how important the overnight at CMC was to them,” said Mgrublian, who spoke to the PFS scholars in the Robert Day Sciences Center alongside Nia Walker, Assistant Professor of Integrated Sciences: Biology, whose interactive presentation was one of the trips highlights.

The PFS program provides underserved Pasadena Unified School Students, most of whom are first-gen, a fully funded, nine-summer experience centered on academic and personal growth, college readiness, career exploration, and community engagement.

For CMC alumnus Kevin Alvarado ‘11 and CMC Admission Officer Mu Hwa Nagata, participating in PFS first as scholars and then as interns-was invaluable in pursuing their educational and career goals.
