Whether you call it soccer or fútbol, whether you’re a lifelong fan or completely new to the game, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is likely to spark thoughts, opinions, and emotions. Join Professor Romeo Guzmán for critical reflections about the world’s most popular sport: its joy, heartbreak, and cultural significance. The lecture will also explore the political dimensions of the World Cup, including perspectives on FIFA, its governance, longstanding controversies, and the business of global football.

CGU Lecture Lounge is a faculty speaker series that brings thought-provoking ideas and engaging conversations to local restaurants throughout the Claremont area. Whether you’re interested in business, psychology, education, technology, or social sciences, each session offers fresh ideas and meaningful discourse. Each event features a distinguished faculty member sharing insights on topics that shape our world, careers, communities, and daily lives.

“Visions of Futból: A CGU Experience”, created and curated by Professor Guzman’s TNDY 409F class, is on exhibition right now in the installation gallery! So if you’ve been watching the World Cup, make sure to stop by to learn some new perspectives on this wonderful sport.

It will be on display until July 24. Gallery hours are 10:30am-5pm, Tuesday-Sunday. The installation gallery is on the main floor of Harper Hall, down the hall from Hagelbarger’s.

“Visions of Futból: A CGU Experience” ⚽️🎨

Our TNDY course, Futból and Politics, will be holding a free and public event where students will present their artwork including sculptures, large-scale canvas paintings, and fiction works.

We’ll have free food and drinks, screen the USA knockout game, host a soccer tennis tournament, and even raffle off a Trionda, an official World Cup Ball! ⚽️

Don’t forget to compliment Professor Guzman on his juggling skills!

On Sunday, June 7, CGU will host Matt Garcia. CGU staff, students, and faculty, are invited to come have lunch with Dr. Garcia and learn more about Claremont. Lunch will be followed by a brief oral history focused on Matt’s experience growing up in Arbol Verde and as a graduate student at CGU.

The 2026 Kingsley and Kate Tufts season ended with a bang! Congratulations again to our Kingsley Tufts winner, Jennifer Chang (An Authentic Life), and our Kate Tufts winner, Eduardo Martínez-Leyva (Cowboy Park). We will forever be grateful for their contributions to this award and the world of poetry.

Thank you to our jury this year including Vievee Francis, Major Jackson, Ed Pavlić, francine j. harris, and our chair, Donika Kelly. Their collaborative spirit and integrity are unmatched.

Congratulations to SAH alum, Rene Romero, who was chosen as a 2026 California Teacher of the Year! He is currently an International Baccalaureate teacher at South Hills High School, a local high school in Covina. As an International Baccalaureate teacher who supports students to make meaning out of advanced and complex texts, Mr. Romero uses his own background as an English Learner from East Los Angeles to make sure that his classroom is an inclusive and supportive environment.
