Su Tung-P’o
1037–1101 With Mao and Fang, Visiting Bright Insight Monastery

It’s enough on this twisting mountain road to
simply stop.
Clear water cascades thin down rock, startling
admiration,

white cloud swells of itself across ridgelines east
and west,
and who knows if the lake’s bright moon is above
or below?

It’s the season black and yellow millet both begin
to ripen,
oranges red and green, halfway into such lovely
sweetness.
All this joy in our lives — what is it but heaven’s
great gift?
Why confuse the children with all our fine
explanations?

Alumnus John Fanestil, MDiv '92, is in the news! John is a long-time leader of Friends of Friendship Park, an organization working to ensure American access to land shared between the United States and Mexico.

For generations there were no barriers between the United States and Mexico at this location. In 2006, the US government started creating barriers and in 2020, people in the United States were denied access to the park altogether. Today's is CST's Dr. Namjoonk Kim who wrote on the struggles of worship in the post-Covid era. He says: "Coronavirus has spread a culture of avoiding face-to-face contact and caused major changes in society as a whole by expanding remote education and telecommuting working. It is expected these changes will present a great challenge to the worship community in the future.

Churches are in a situation where they have to change the way they used to do their ministry and worship service. In particular, in this situation, new questions and investigations are needed about the purpose, meaning, action, nature, order, method, time, place, people, and the sacrament of the worship service. The economy, politics, society, and culture have continued to grow through the flexibility of innovating what is familiar, what has been done well, and taking new risks that have not yet been verified. The same goes for the church community. There are churches that have rather increased the number of church members in the COVID-19 era, and this is the result of actively activating online and offline worship service and gathering from the center of field worship service, which has been familiar and good and applying flexibility to worship time and space.

I hope people can experience honesty, humility, hospitality, and despair turning into hope through meeting with God and the gospel. I hope you, who are asking questions about worship in the post-Corona era, will be able to read the paradigm of a new civilization triggered by Corona. Moreover, I pray that it will be a community of worship that contributes to transforming civilization through creative innovation in worship service.

On a Forenoon of Spring

I'm glad I am alive, to see and feel
The full deliciousness of this bright day,
That's like a heart with nothing to conceal;
The young leaves scarcely trembling; the blue-grey
Ri***ng the cloudless ether far away;
Brairds, hedges, shadows; mountains that reveal
Soft sapphire; this great floor of polished steel
Spread out amidst the landmarks of the bay.

Today’s is D.Min. Rev. Se-Heon Choi! Dr. Se-Heon Choi first visited CST in winter of 2010 and was very impressed with the school. In 2019, he started the D.Min. program with the help of his congregation where he serves as a pastor, Chong-Kyo Methodist Church in Seoul.

Se-Heon Choi says “When I was given the opportunity to study, I did not hesitate to think of CST. This is because, of course, the warm memories of 2010, as well as the many respected pastors I met in the field of ministry, were all CST alumni. I started my first semester at the Claremont campus in Los Angeles in May 2019 with an inflated heart for new challenges.”

He obtained a D.Min in Practical Theology and said the program “made me realize that life is an endless series of interdependencies. I live under the demands of independence, but above all else, by acknowledging and revealing my vulnerabilities, I have once again confirmed the fact that we cannot walk toward the kingdom of God unless we are in solidarity with each other. In the future, based on what I have experienced and realized through all these processes, I promise to move forward with constant challenges and practices in the future ministry field. I hope that more pastors will be able to participate in this precious challenge and learning process.”

A Message from Dr. Sheryl A. Kujawa-Holbrook:

PROFESSIONAL TRANSITION! June 30 was my last official day as the V.P. for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of CST. I will continue as a professor and teach part-time starting in August. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to work with President Jeffrey Kuan since 2013. After serving as the dean at two different theological schools, I hope to carve out some time before I get too much older to pursue projects that I had to rule out given the extent of my administrative responsibilities. I remain committed to the mission of CST and hope I can now be of support through teaching and mentoring students. I am very grateful that I found my vocation in theological education; even in times of struggle I have always felt called to this work, and feel fortunate that my work and vocation are in alignment.

Congratulations, Dr. Kujawa-Holbrook! We are grateful for all you do at CST.
