This study examined the multiple factors necessary to cultivate positive and sustaining science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) identity formation for women of color (WOC), with a focus on 11 WOC secondary (STEM) educators from the Los Angeles region. This study was framed by Chicana feminist epistemology and an intersectional lens and utilized the plática methodology to understand the throughline between the development of STEM identity and the evolution of becoming a STEM secondary educator through the voices of 11 WOC STEM teachers.

Time to celebrate Dr. Fabian Pacheco! Joined by his amazing partner and mother to their beautiful children, Fabian defended his dissertation with much passion and credibility through powerful conceptual frameworks, participant voices, and key findings on:

Interrupting the “Vanishing Latino” Phenomenon in Higher Education: Counternarratives of Persistence Among Second Year Latino College Students in Hispanic Serving Institutions

Dr. Fabian Pachecho’s Positionality offers a powerful insight into his why:
“When times change, you will never be lost because you will always know what holds you and who holds you. And that will be your ancestors and the people around you, more than you’ve ever known, that you are not alone.” (Ito, 2021)

"My journey has been one of continuous learning, unlearning, and relearning—an ongoing process of critically engaging with both institutional and community knowledge to understand who I am and who I strive to become. I have learned to amplify and honor the efforts of my ancestors while advancing the experiences of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). My work is driven by a commitment to challenging systemic inequities and advancing the liberation of BIPOC within and beyond academic spaces. Through research, counseling, and teaching, I have sought to dismantle oppressive institutional structures while fostering learning environments that center the voices, histories, and knowledge systems of marginalized communities. I actively engage in opportunities that make education more equitable and empowering, ensuring that students not only access but also transform the institutions they navigate."

Kudos to is amazing committee Dr. Claudia Bermúdez, Ph.D. (Chair) and Dr. Emilie Reagan. We look forward to the many ways that Dr. Pacheco will share his research and policy application!

Education is best understood through a lens of educational equity and social justice. While colleges and universities can reflect the broader challenges of society—where bias and oppression may surface—they also have the power to disrupt historical injustice, challenging entrenched patterns of discrimination and advancing practices rooted in individual and community well-being. Forward-thinking educators recognize the vital role schools play in supporting diverse communities and shaping more equitable and inclusive educational environments.
