Rope Rescue Operations

This 20 hour class meeting the NFPA 1006, 2021 Ed., and the requirements for IFSAC certification, is being held at Winfield District VFD, Fairmont, WV (Marion County) on June 11, 13, and 14, 2026. Class times are 6-10pm on Thursday and Saturday/Sunday from 9am – 5pm each day. Michael Wilburn is the course instructor. Students should come to class each day dressed for rope rescue work (long pants, helmet, gloves, closed toe shoes or boots). Cost for this class is $70 per person. Prerequisite training is rope rescue awareness or core rescue prerequisites course.

Fireground Search and Rescue

This 24 hour course will help hone your fire ground search and rescue skills. Course topics and skills will include search of large structures, searching ahead of hand-lines, searching off hand-lines, fully involved structures versus survivability profiling, VES, use of thermal imaging cameras, and search and rescue during in basement fires. Day 1 will includes hands on skills in an non IDLH atmosphere, and Day 2 will include multiple live fire search operations. Full structural FF PPE along with SCBA and a spare cylinder are required. Class location is Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport, WV (Harrison County). Class days/times are Friday June 5 from 6pm – 10pm, and Saturday/Sunday June 6 and 7 from 8am – 6pm. On both Saturday and Sunday students should bring lunch and plenty of water to remain hydrated throughout the course. Cost for the course is $150 per student.

Art of Reading Smoke

Often smoke issuing from a building is the only clue available to predict fire behavior and the likelihood of a flashover or rapid fire spread. First-arriving officers must read smoke before choosing attack tactical priorities. Incident Commanders and Safety Officers must know how to rapidly read smoke in order to keep firefighters within an acceptable risk-profile.

This 8-hour course will be conducted at Boothesville VFD (Marion County). Class date is Saturday May 30, 2026 9am to 5 pm. Donnie Goodwin is the instructor.

A 16 hour heavy vehicle rescue technician course is being held at Winfield District VFD (Marion County) on Saturday May 30 and Sunday June 7, 2026 from 9am to 5pm each day. This class meets NFPA JPRs for heavy vehicle rescue technician as well as the skills for IFSAC certification (additional written exam required). Michael Wilburn is the lead instructor. Students must come prepared for each class session with PPE appropriate for vehicle rescue, including eye protection.

Cost of the class is $50 tuition, $85 for the textbook, and an additional $25 testing fee for anyone wishing to test for IFSAC certification.

AHA BLS Heartcode
We will be offering a blended American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) course on Wednesday May 27, 2026 at 6pm at United Technical Center, Clarksburg, WV (Harrison County). Students must purchase on their own, and complete, the AHA Heartcode BLS online course and bring a copy of the completion certificate with them on 5/27/26. ONLY the skills portion of the class will be covered on 5/27/2026 to allow folks that have completed the online course to receive certification.

Wilderness First Aid
A 16 hour Wilderness First Aid course will be offered at Whitmer VFD, Whitmer, WV (Randolph County) May 9 and 10, 2026, from 8:30am – 4:30pm. Bryan Roy will be the lead instructor for the course. This course differs from traditional first aid courses in that it provides participants with knowledge and skills to provide first aid in settings where help is greater than 1 hour away. Course is taught following the Emergency Care and Safety Institute curriculum. Participants must be present for the entire class in order to receive certification. Cost for the course is $85 per person, which includes tuition, ebook, and course completion certificate for those that successfully complete the class. Preregistration is required.

An American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid course is being held May 6, 2026 starting at 5pm at United Technical Center, Clarksburg, WV 26301. This class is designed for the lay rescuer (lay public, home health/in home care, schools, industry, OSHA compliance, non-EMS trained firefighters, etc.) and is not a healthcare provider course. Cost of the class is $45 per person, payable the night of class by cash, or check/money order payable to MSESC.

DRIVER OPERATOR – PUMPER

This 40-hour course is being conducted at Shinnston Fire Department, Shinnston, WV (Harrison County). Class dates will be April 8, 10, 11, 14, 16, 20, 23, & 25, 2026. Class times will be 7am-5pm on weekends and 5pm – 9pm weekdays. Justin George is the instructor.

PREREQUISITES: Student must be certified in Firefighter 1, or Firefighter 1 Module 1, and Emergency Vehicle Operations, and must have a valid driver’s license.

*Student must bring copies of his/her Firefighter 1 (or FF 1 Module 1) and EVOC certificates to first class session.

TUITION: $60 per student. The Fire Apparatus Driver Operator textbook will be available at $80 each.
