Washington University Residential Life Live. Learn. Lead. Welcome to Washington University's Office of Residential Life! Residential Life's guiding principles are Live.

Our program consists of the South 40 and the North Side where over 4,000 students call Residential Life home during the school year. Nicknamed "the 40" because it is forty acres located directly South of the Danforth Campus, this space is home to about 3200 residents in twenty four Residence Halls, recreational space, computer clusters, campus eateries, and much, much more.

“The 40” is a place to study, sleep, eat, relax, and make new friendships. Many of our upperclass students live on the North Side, which is located at the Northwest corner of the Danforth Campus. The North Side consists of The Village and our on and off campus apartments, each of which provide a variety of programs and amenities for students to enjoy. Lead, which guides our work and our initiatives.

Fall Fest 2026 - What a wonderful evening celebrating the season with our residential community! Students enjoyed caramel apples, mini pumpkin painting, bouquet making, fall nail art, a photo booth, apple c***r, and more while connecting with friends and making new memories. 🎃🍎✨
A huge thank you to Congress of the South 40 and our CoCos for organizing such a fun and engaging event. Seeing our community come together to celebrate fall is what makes residential living so special. 🧡
